Which M635CSi do you prefer. S2-based or Highline?

Post by Pod »

What with all the bad weather here, I've been idling my hours away surfing the 'net. I noticed that two white M635s are up for sale on ebay UK.

An S2 with 53k up for £50k or a Highline with 150k for £40k.

Notwithstanding the mileages, service histories or vendors; who agrees with me that the S2 is a better looking car, mainly due to the chrome bumpers?

I disagree, I have an 86 US 635 that I converted to World Bumpers.
The fog light design just looks better to me.

In terms of the bumpers alone I'm very much a Highline fan. But more important than bumper difference is the all leather interior of (most) Highlines.

When I bought my first M635CSi (an S2) so many years ago, I would frequently lament that I didn’t own the more contemporary and modern bumper treatment of the Highline cars. I longed to replace mine with a later, more “fashionable” model.

However when the time did eventually come around to changing that first car for another, it didn’t enter my mind that I should purchase a Highline. By that stage, I felt the newer bumper treatment had itself become truly dated, and I saw these later cars as suffering from an automotive equivalent of Botox, silicone implants and fillers. There is something a little graceless, desperate and undignified about someone or something that’s getting on in years, trying to appear younger.

Paul Bracq never penned the E24 with such addendum, just as Marcelo Gandini never created the Countach with the frankly hideous 25th Anniversary bodykit.

E24s, much like myself, looked fresher and more pure in their looks when they were younger. And that’s exactly how I like to remember them.

BTW Pod, excellent discussion topic.

Mmmm.... :-k I do like both .
However as a series one owner I definitely prefer the simpler aesthetics of that model which is carried over on to the series two .
The initial design comes from a "chrome " era so that is my preferance .
The highline has it's place in the life of the model, and it carries the style embelishments well, but lacks the grace of the S2 .
S2 for me .

On reflection, I think I might be able to agree that the S2 bumper is aesthetically more pleasing on the eye, but it's more that I don't especially like the front lower valence of the S2 anything like as much as on the Highlines.
