Re: Unwanted visitor
Paul, I've actually heard that rats don't like lavender
Think I'd Google that first, but that sucks
Looks like that harness is still intact
I've been lucky, in fact I've never had a vehicle invaded by rodents

Re: Unwanted visitor
How do you think I felt when I opened the hood on my M3 that had been stored in a barn for a couple months and found this (I was physically ill!) and these pictures were AFTER I'd vacuumed enough that you could see the valve cover. I've been piecing the wiring harness together for weeks. Amazingly they only chewed off one set of coil wires. It still ran, but missing on #6, the one with no coil wires.

Re: Unwanted visitor
I would of been sick too.
My car is inside in warehouse in light commercial area so that helps keep rodents down, not exposed to much outdoors. But they do visit once in while.
What did you do to try n keep them away?
I was referred to electronic methods as reliable but I don't frequent the shop much now that I've moved away and if I get one critters, we'll it's gonna smell for a bit and others,if any, will get free pass til I do empty trap which could be weeks at a time.
I think I'm just going to invest in more snap traps, small n large in put them in all engine bays.
Re: Unwanted visitor
I've got a couple of these https://goodnature.co.nz/products/a24-rat-stoat as every winter they invade the woodpile and have got in under the roof space before, and we no longer have a cat.
They are NZ made, but you may have something similar. They automatically reset, with bait and gas cylinder last about 6 months. Cylinders are the same as those used in inflatable life jackets.

Re: Unwanted visitor
Beside having several cats that are good "mousers", I had moth crystals in the interior, but never considered the little SOBs would nest in the engine compartment. Live and learn. By the way, what wasn't rat crap and remains of wires was peanut hulls. A farmer had leased the field and planted peanuts. I guess they fetched the peanuts and brought them to the car to eat them, because there wasn't a single peanut in there that I could find, just hulls. Pounds and pounds of hulls.

Re: Unwanted visitor
Bounce dryer sheets have worked for me.
Re: Unwanted visitor
How about a 12V battery on a charger with bare copper wires under the car in a serpentine pattern to deter the buggers?

Re: Unwanted visitor
I haven't this problem but I hear dryer sheets help, lavender and mint as rats do not like fragrances

Modern vehicles suffer as well...our new Toyota Prado has a 'Pollen Filter' and apparently the sweetness attracts rodents... and they ate through the filter and continued with the wiring loom!!

I have used Bounce sheets and peppermint oil which has seemed to keep mice away from the interior and engine bay. Mice did get in to the air intake and chewed at the air filter a couple of years ago.

Re: Unwanted visitor
Keep the hood open and place some lights under in the engine bay and under the car. That will help keep the critters away.

Victor electronic kill trap. Uses a few D cells and zapps the buggers. I also place bait stations with Con-trac in them around the house that have warfarin in them. I'm told the fat binder attracts the mice and the anti-coagulant kills them. I buy from Do My Own Pest Control (www.domyown.com)
