I am 2 weeks into being the "loud and proud" owner of a 1985 635CSi.
Purchased from 1st Owner, NZ new, LARGE KMs, but well maintained.
Plate in engine compartment states
635CSi | 34 6E B | WBAEC720X08175311
M5 | 139/1 | plus weights
Reading a few posts I figured the following
[8175311] = VIN = 635 CSi ECE right handed (UK spec stick)
[139] = Colour = Bronze Beige - Metallic
Car has a close ratio 5 speed tran, and Hydraulic self levelling rear end
Apart from a bad idle everything else appears to be standard
What is the slash 1 [139/1] ?
What does the rest give me. ?
Any info appreciated..
Model/VIN Numbers what do they mean?
Moderators: GRNSHRK, ron, bfons
the /1 could refer to the paint shade. Very often paints come in different shades.
I don't know for sure about BMW, but very often the first digits of a VIN number refer to the manufacturer and the plant the vehicle came out of, eg.
JHMC = Japanese Honda Motor company
KK = a specific plant in Japan
and so forth.
I expect BMW are the same in this regard, certainly only the last few digits of the VIN are actually required to uniquely identify your vehicle; somewhere on here we had a link to a BMW VIN code cracker, you might want to have a look at that if you have not already- this will tell you the exact date of manufacture, and various other details.
cheers

Some useful VIN web links
Hi,
this is my first post (just bought my first 635), while checking for what a car
is (or at least what the manuafcturer says it is) I found a few useful web sites
http://www.analogx.com/contents/vinview.htm
http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi
hope this helps,
Iain.

This is what the analogx site made of my beemer WBAEC 820808 xxxxxx
(my comments in brackets)
Description Position Raw Data Decoded Data
Region: 1 W =Europe
Country: 1-2 WB =Germany
Manufacturer: 2-3 BA=BMW
Model Specific: 4-8 EC820 =Unknown
Check Digit: 9 8=Valid
Year: 10 0 = Unknown
Assembly Plant: 11 8 (8 should be Dingolfing)
Serial Number: 12-17 (unique vehicle idetifier)
Apparently there is an ISO standard ISO 3779 for VIN numbers.
The Z1 site is the one I was thinking of before, and this will tell you a bit about your original build spec- you only need digits 12-17 for this.
cheers

SA Codes ??
I found a production build sheet under right rear seat (thanks to HenryC)
and was able to perform decoding thanks to the site:
http://www.6ercoupe.de/englisch/laufz1.html
I do have a warm fuzzy now that I know I have a ;;
SA 0206 - 5-speed-gearbox, sports version,
SA 0209 - Limited slip differential, 25%, and a
SA 0220 - Self-leveling rear axle
And I am waiting to be able to travel down South to cooler regions so I can take full advantage of ;
SA 0314 Electrically heated and remotely operated door mirrors on both sides, heated driver's door lock, heated windshield washer nozzles
But can anyone help me with the following 2 SA numbers.???
SA 0823 Version for Tropics - and SA 0850
PS: It is little wonder the tyres are so expensive with a description like
SA 0290 Low profile tires on hand-made BMW alloy wheels, TRX 220/55VR390 including wheel-locks
Thanks - Garry
