How many multiple sixers............

Post by sharkfan »

Hi guys,

Just a straw poll, but how many of us currently own more than one six? 8) (Rotting hulks do count - a pile of remains don't - see part two)

And how many of us have owned other sixes - either now the above mentioned pile of remains, or sold on, or written off?

I'll set the ball rolling;

Currently, 1985 M635 in alpine white and 1982 635 auto in baltic blue.

Previously, 1989 Auto Highline in met black (UKDaveJ's now got it) and a 1984 635 auto in dark met blue - an insurance write off seven years ago but recently spotted in the background of a photograph of a BMW 'specialist' in the Sheffield area

Sharkfan

Ron, my apologies - I think you'll be scratching your head all day, and writing all night :D

Thanks Kev!!! I currntly have 3.Two highlines and a '79 633 convertible.Hopefully one highline will go soon (when I get the cam.cover etc.back from Dave I can swop the parts back over). In total I've had around 15 6s which I have either sold on or broken. It will be wonderful when I get my new garage built (just got planning permission) and I can work in comfort.I'm getting too old to work outside.

Not a multiple Six owner, (although in 2001, there was a period when I almost took on a 1986 M635CSi... expensive mistake I almost made), but here's what you probably didn't know about my much-loved old '83.

On the August Bank Holiday 2002, I took off from a standing start exiting a slip road, only to find that the Fiesta in front of me still hadn't pulled out. Result: one mangled Fiesta (written-off), one Six with broken nose.

Insurance co. decided - after seeing the likely bill for repairs (which topped ?2800) - to write off my Six as well. However, they classified it as a Category "C" repairable, and gave the car back to me with a cheque in settlement.

This proved to be the perfect excuse to start its renaissance, which eventually cost ?2500 including partial respray of critical areas.

The result is the met. burgundy car with clear front indicator lenses you sometimes see at meets or shows.

It is still a Category "C", as I never had the time to get the repairs assessed to "Condition Inspected". This is also the reason why I could never sell it - no one in their right mind is going to take on a known insurance write-off unless they were a real enthusiast..... or just obsessed.

Categories for write offs

What are the different categories for Insurance write offs and what do they mean?

In summary:

Category "A" and "B" - seriously damaged, structurally or mechanically to such an extent that the cars are likely to remain unroadworthy even if sufficient time and money were taken to try and repair them. These vehicles may yield useable components, but the remains must then be destroyed.

Category "C and "D" - lightly damaged, but driveable, vehicles. Written off because cost of repair deemed to outweigh the car's current market value. Can be repaired and made roadworthy in your own time and cost.... as I found out.

I only have one at the moment but in the last two years I've had

3 x 628's, 1 was braoken for spares the other two sold on.
6 x 635's, 1 I still own and Am not selling, 2 I have sold on and 3 I have broken for spares.

At one point I did own 5 all at once and I got loads of earache off the missus.

Just the two below!

1984 A reg 635csi auto chrome bumper in Opal green metallic. Needs work, but will be done during early next year.

1989 F reg 635csi auto Highline in Diamond black metallic(ex Sharkfan). Needs a few bits doing, but less than the A reg.

These cars are the same, but different. Chalk & cheese.

They drive, handle, cruise, brake, accelerate, corner differently, oh and both have cruise control.

We have three other cars at home, a 2003 330d, 2000 VW Golf & young Chris' 1987 Renault 5. We are up to our car limit - we have no more space......., my good lady couldn't take any more cars, as there are two motorbikes stored & a couple of trailers......

When I've finished the present one (87 chrome bumper 635Auto) I'm tempted to get a manual 635CSi with an LSD, tune it up, strip the weight out of it (my target would be 1200kg road legal, and 230-240bhp at the wheels), a second one just for fun.....

cheers
