I seem to remember that the UK was supposed to have accounted for 0760001 to 524 inclusive.
Not sure if that is correct,

I think 0760.... just refers to a RHD car. My car was not produced for BMW GB. It was exported from the factory to Malawi, although it never ended up there ( a paper exercise to facilitate a tax dodge). The car was actually driven from Munich direct to Jersey by the original owner.

BMW GB have no record of my car in their system, but it still has the 0760... chassis number.
According to the build sheet your car, # 524, was built to GB spec. (812)

and the supplying dealer was Cooper # 15144.
They are ALWAYS rustier than you thought!!!!!!

Hmmm.....

That's interesting Ron,

When I called BMW GB to get some info on the car they said all they had was the build sheet ,but no other info on the car.

They told me they did not think it was a car ordered by the GB network, although it is a GB spec car.

I know it never came through a cooper showroom when new, as the owner picked it up from the Dinglofling factory in person, perhaps they ordred it.

The plot thickens...

You are correct 0760 = RHD so the Oz, NZ, and Hong Kong new cars have 0760--- VINs

Was chatting to a chap in Ireland this evening.

He has just sold his M635 chasis no. 396. It is now in a container heading down to Australia.............. surprise, surprise!!

The car had 130,000 miles on the clock, diamond black, pearl beige leather with some front end damage that will need repair.

My E28 M5 is now sold and also on its way down under......Are Australians trying to corner the market in eighties BMW's?????

They are merely trying to make up for lost time by getting hold of the cars that the Australian Government was too stingy/protectionist to allow into the country back then.

That may explain how Holden / HSV have done so well.

I can certainly see a time later this century when there are more M6s in Aus than there are in the UK/IRL. And it will be far too expensive by then to ship them back.

The short answer is that the cars in the UK are much cheaper than the cars for sale already in Oz. Unless you have seen and or experienced it for yourself, we Australians just don't realise how rusty some cars can get on UK roads.

I've lived this so I know... you can land a UK car for and have in on the road for around $A 20-25K - anything halfway decent in Oz is almost twice that. You think "well for A$20K I can fix a lot of rust, and it probably isn't that bad anyway, so I'll take the cheap route and buy a car out of the UK."

It is only when you get the car here and have real good look at it that you realise A$20K isn't even going to come close to fixing it properly...

M5's are different, as there are only a handful here.
I didn't know your car was for sale! which part of Oz is it headed for and who bought it??

My M5 is off to Sydney.

Not all UK cars are rust heaps...my M5 case in point. There is alot of very very good UK cars that have been well looked after....kept off the salty roads and garaged. Which makes the good ones very cheap for Australians.

I think you were particularly unlucky with your car Garry. The problem people from down under have is that they can rarely inspect cars in person, which can lead to an unscrupulous seller taking advantage of the situation.

M635 #324 for sale in Dublin

Post by Bayerische »

I spotted this car for sale in Dublin.

It is chassis number 324. It is still on UK plates. I have inspected the car and unfortunately it is not in good condition.

The usual stuff...rust on sills, wings, roof panel, sunroof panel, around rear lights. The car has been lying up for 2.5 years and has not been started for a year due to the starter motor no longer working.

It has a comprehensive history file and service history but no evidence that the chain has been done.

In my opinion, if you are brave and got it very cheap you could restore it, but sadly, I fear it is now a "parts " car. The black interior is good.

A real shame to see another one gone by the wayside.

I have no connection with the seller, if anyone is interested and I can be of assistance, pm me.

399 has just appeared on Ebay in pretty bad shape.

Incorrectly described as a Highline, it does have a black Highline interior which has replaced the original blue one.

Pardon my ignorance Garry but how do you know it's number 288 just by reading the ad? Have you memorised all of them since birth and recognise each one as it pops up? You should be on the stage. =D>

Ron and I are working together to collate a database of all the RHD M635's, and how they left the factory. This includes (in most cases) the original UK rego of the car. So in cases like this one where the car still has it's original number I can trace it easily...

Not sure I belong on stage, although some have suggested I'd make a great side show act... Maybe Mr E and I as the long and short of it

Thanks, but no good for the register... they obviously made a serious production error with this car and put the steering wheel on the wrong side!!
