Power Steering help needed (still)

Post by Carlp336 »

back story is im finished with my build but dont have power steering.

first. i completed everything and put it together with no luck (zero assist from the pump)

second, rebuilt my OE pump and in the interim bought a reman unit which is overly difficult to find. reman pump yielded same result.

third and current step, i pulled the reman unit last night and will try my OE one that has been refreshed.

though this is the odd part.. ive noticed my reman pump and OE one arent exactly the same, casting is similar enough 110 bar vs 100. but (see pic) mine had a clear opening and reman has some sort of blockage on the outlet.

I have a later pump on the shelf and found both ports to be wide open for flow. No check valve no obstruction.

The obstruction you have will clearly prevent fluid flow. If it is in the inlet side (larger port) there is no way gravity flow will open the port and allow fluid into the pump and if it is on the outlet side - pressure will force the obstruction into the port and continue to block it.

Have you tried to have the old pump rebuilt? Kits are available for some of the PS pumps and JCS has experience with the rebuilds. Best of luck.

Ralph

Edit: BTW - Your car (with all 6 ITBs) is awesome!! Question on your other thread forthcoming.

PS Pump

Post by JCS »

Carl,

I have not repaired the early '77 PS Pump, as there is no kit but some internal parts are still available.

Rock Auto sells a PS Pump for $97. + a $30.0 core.
Here is the link.

Rockauto also has seal kits as follows:
Edelmann #8841 $20.79
Gates #348424 $29.79
Don't know if it includes a shaft seal which is as follows:
National #7013S $4.86
SKF #7475 $9.62

This is for my 1984 633Csi which should have the same or similar pumps, but at least you can check Rockauto for your car.
I've seen a post somewhere about rebuilding the pumps.

Good Luck,
Ken

-in which case the pump may also be drawing in air when the engine is running, and 'froth' does not make for a working PAS system.

if you look inside the reservoir when the engine is running (have an assistant work the steering perhaps) then you may see frothy fluid coming back down the return pipe into the reservoir.

cheers

If the car he's working on now is the same one that's on his website, I'd be dedicated too! Damn what a fine engine bay. I'll have to revisit his project.
Sorry I can't help Carl, other than suggest a collapsed hose, possibly intermittent, like when there's pressure... ain't no magic on things mechanical like this.
Bill

PS... may also explain the new seal leaking.

yea thats whats so frustrating.

its a simple system.

(all news hoses and new filter. )

A. original setup. oe pump / oe gearbox. failed
B. REMAN pump / oe gearbox. failed
C. Rebuilt oe pump / oe gearbox. failed
D. Rebuilt oe pump / gearbox #2. failed

each scenario was bled and with clean fluid each time. i have no frame of reference as to what it should feel like, but i know it should feel different running vs. off.
