Front wheel bearing replacement.
I plan on replacing the front wheel bearings on my e12 based 6. I've replaced the bearing on my E46 in the past, and those come with the hub/bearing pressed in, but i understand there are two bearings for these cars that are separate from the hub, is there anything i need to know about these when doing the replacement? Thanks guys.
Re: Front wheel bearing replacement.
IIRC this is all written up pretty well in the E12 Haynes manual, and it isn't that difficult to do, either. I am pretty sure there are threads on here for that very thing. Firstfives is worth a look too of course.
Aren't the E12 front bearings adjustable in fact?
I know the E28 based ones are completely different to that, and you normally need new hubs when the bearings fail.
cheers

Thank you, that helps. Before replacing the bearing i think ill see if i can tighten it and rid of the play i can feel within the hub. Thanks
Re: Front wheel bearing replacement.
whatever you do, don't overtighten the bearings; read the recommendations and follow them to the letter.
IIRC they are taper roller bearings; in many applications they are correctly set when there is a little play (cold) because the hub runs hotter than the stub axle and the bearing clearance therefore decreases in service.

Re: Front wheel bearing replacement.
Maybe pull the outer bearing and see status before you adjust. Repack of grease could provide longer service life as well.

Thanks guys. Ill report back after i open it up.
Re: Front wheel bearing replacement.
If I remember correctly the e12 chassis cars had a couple of different bearing sets depending on year so make sure you get the correct ones for your application.
