Large puddle of ATF

Post by evodrichie »

Came out a few morning ago to a large puddle of ATF from the power steering system under the car. After a quick test I found a pin hole leak in the high psi line. Ordered a new line, put it in drove it around, and same large puddle next morning. I've read that the grub screw may be the problem. I have a new accumulator on the way to me since mine is faulty so I'll be in there soon again. What should I look for, is there a common area to start with?. Thanks for any help.

First make sure you are using the correct procedure to fill the system. The pressure should be purged from the system before you check the level in the reservoir. If you just remove the cover and add fluid it will be over filled.

If you have filled properly and still have a leak: check the grub screw at the bottom of the booster to see if the leak is coming from the port in front of the screw. If it is leaking here: you may need to replace the seal in the booster or rebuild the booster.

It's definitely dripping our of the weep hole. Which o ring do I need? 38mm x 3mm?

Or, do what I did, and have Jay rebuild it for you. Worth every penny.

+1 Definitely have Jay do a rebuild. Plus a new brake bomb, HP and LP lines are recommended given the age of the car. I did mine last year (its a 84 633CSI) plus refreshed the master cylinder as long as the booster is out.

If you want a bullet proof job, get a machined aluminum seal carrier from Max Lumens and let Jay put the whole thing together.

Is there a way to convert to vacuum boosted brakes?
