Chassis rail width

Post by daharro »

I'm planning to get the chassis rails on my e24 rebuilt this weekend, and i'd like to order some box section to make it easier.
Can someone measure the width of the chassis rails for me? I'm not near my motor!

3" in the front where it starts curving up the firewall

2.5" in the rear when it begins to slop up to meet the body.

Measured on an 84 633 but I'd imagine all the e29 based guys are the same.

Wow, that looks like a lot of tedious work to correct!

Mine weren't rotted but badly dented from being used as a jacking point. We cut off the top section and straightened the top etc and then welded back together. I guess I got lucky as there was only minimum rot and rust on the underside of my car.
