M tech steering wheel issue

Post by angad22 »

Hey guys, I recently bought an M-tech coarse spline steering wheel on ebay for my '79 Euro spec 635 - problem is, even though the wheel fits, it sits about 1" away from the steering column where it should connect with the horn ring. How can I fill in that gap and make the horn work as well as make the turn signal click-off when I straighten the steering wheel after a turn? Any ideas appreciated.

It sounds like you haven't got the correct steering wheel; post up a pic of the back of the steering wheel and the top of the column with the cowl/cover.

Remove the Spacer. and try again.

When I swapped the column on my e23 I had spline like that. The did not fit e24 coarse splined wheels. I had to swap to a e24/e28 column.

The lower is the E24/e28 and the upper is e23. Not sure if early e24s had the same.

Image.

Here is what it should look like to fit a e24/e28 coarse spline wheel.

Looks to me like there might be a couple of spacers on the shaft. If so, I would try sliding them off and seeing if that corrects the fit. Although it looks like the horn ring is properly resting against the steering wheel. Can you put up profile pics of both wheels, so we can compare?

Remove the spacers first of course but make sure the turn signal return tab is retracted or the steering wheel is Off Center when you install it or you will break the TS Return Tab! Ask me how I know and you'll get a frowned stare with a finger.

+1 to this ^^^

I did that to a brand new turn signal switch. Many curse words were used.

Here's a couple of photos of my original '81 wheel . I replaced it with a MotoLita on a Momo hub with homemade adaptor and it fitted WITH the spacer on the shaft . Dimensions are 18mm from contact ring to end of boss and 30mm from same to end of indicator return tongue .

Very low tech really .
Flat 4mm steel plate turned as per drawing. I don't have all the dimensions but they are self explanatory . The scribe line is the PCD of the Momo , the Motolita PCD can be marked by simply holding the wheel against the plate .After drilling the nine holes for the Motolita fixings slot them slightly to help you to align the wheel to the straight ahead position.
The horn push casing for the Motolita is approx 15mm deep so a spacer is required between the plate and the wheel centre . I was going to have a steel or alloy spacer made up but went for a "country" solution to the problem . I turned down a section of 18mm thick Oak to suit and painted it black.
Some longer countersunk hex head stainless steel screws finished it off.
