Problem with new purchased 1986 CSI 125K mi

Post by vietrice4ever »

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum. I just recently purchased 1986 635CSI about 125K mi. The car been park in the garage for over 10 years. The owner did some works to make the car runs and passed smog.

First problem was driving home about 100 miles on the freeway. I feel some shaking badly, I tried to slow down little bit so it gets better. It's on and off the whole way. I didn't drive on the freeway when I test drove the car.

Second, I parked the car in the basement for a week and finally went to start the car to keep the battery charging. the car running for about 10 mins I hear the popping noise and red-ish liquid all over the floor. I realized it was power steering fluid.

The last thing was I took the car to smog station i realized that the car has no power steering because of the broken parts, but also my brake gets really hard and not braking well, but I was able to make it to the station and get back home.
I think there're more problems but not yet identify until I actually drive it for more.

Please let me know the problems and what is good brands for parts.

thank you

Welcome to the group!

The vibration is no doubt due to the tires being 10+ years old and probably severely flat-spotted from sitting for all that time.

The fluid leak is, yes, from the power steering system. One thing that is a lot different on our cars is the power steering system also powers the brake booster. If you lose power steering, you lose most brake effectiveness.

Look here in this forum (the suspension steering and brake forum) for diys about brake system and power steering system repairs.

Any car that's been sitting for 10+ years needs some sort of Baseline Maintenance.

1st the Tires need to be replaced like Horn mentioned.

Here is a good link for Base-lining an e24/e28 BMW.

If you didn't know an e28 (5 series) runs on a similar chassis as the e24 (6 series)

Rod's page is very good too.

thank you Horn and Brick for your input.

I forgot to mentioned, the wheels balance twice and new tires installed. The last thing I though may be the drive shaft, I have not drive on freeway again to test. If it's the drive shaft, what is the good brand to replace?

Thank you

Could be Drive shaft or Center support Bearing.

Also check, Upper and lower control arms in the front, Transmission and Engine mounts

If it winds up being the drive shaft and you have an auto, I have an oem shaft from my 86 5 speed swap that has only

3500 miles on it. Let me know if you'll need it.

Is the shaking felt in your steering wheel? Does the steering wheel seem to shake slightly in a back and forth motion? (front control arms, common, easy fix)

Thank you for the feedback. I drove only once a while back. I took it to the mechanic last week, he told me all the arms are new.

Thanks again

I took it to the shop last week. Shop told me that my steering gearbox leaking and cv boot from passenger side broke. So far this is two problems.

Is there a way just replace the gasket gearbox or re-manufacture or new? any brand recommendation?

CV Boot, should I replace the axles and complete kit left and right or just the rubber piece or whole right set? brand?

Thank you all
