Brake line flaring tool 3/16 or 4.75mm

Post by Ronnie Wilson »

Hi Everyone,

I need to replace my brake lines, So need to order a brake line flaring tool.
Does anyone know if it makes a difference if i purchase a 3/16"sae tool or a 4.75mm Din tool. I have measured the diameter of my old pipe and it measures around 5mm.

Thanks :-k

40 years ago I bought a flaring tool that could do single or double flares. i have no clue til this date whether or not it was SAE or Metric. I do know it has provisions for 4 different size tubes. Many, many brake lines and other flared lines have been made using it and never a failure. This includes BMW Jaguar and Ferrari. I don't think anything more than a flaring tool available at a parts store is needed,

Hi Ronnie .
You need the DIN flare tool , SAE will not give the return flat edge for the nut to make the seal. There are videos on U tube that say that the SAE can be used by reversing the former ,but it doesn't.
This shows the profile difference between the two.

Thanks guys

The middle picture has the same form as the pipe work on the car so I'll go with that. Car has been on axle stands for six months now. Will this ever end
