Hear me out...I have an 88 635csi "all world" car. I eventually want to put it on air since I love the way the sharks look laid out on the ground. But the one big thing that I can't bring myself too is chopping up the suspension parts and using a universal air bag and frakensteining them together.
So I had the idea of MAYBE taking the suspension out of something newer (e46, e39, etc) that has more parts and kits readily available for it. My question is, has anyone ever done a swap like this? Taking the OEM equipment out and putting a newer updated suspension underneath it?

Re: E39 Suspension Swap..
one lad converted his E24 to air suspension and (he said) converted the car in such a way as the only hacking and drilling of the bodywork was the holes required for the compressed air supply. No idea what kit he used, mind, or how much custom-made stuff was involved.

Might want to contact this guy, he's got his '87 in the "For Sale" section

He bought it bagged, IIRC, but hopefully has the info you need
