Forced Self Levelling Suspension Delete Need Help

Post by MSGGrunt »

I am unable to locate a leaking switch on my 87 M6 SLS so, like others, I will be converting to standard coils and shocks.

I do not want to lower the car if I can help it and want to match the original front ride height as I will not be changing out anything in the front. I am just not in a position to pop for the full blown Bilstein option right now and need to get the car drivable.

Question?

1. Can I just go on real OEM, look up part numbers for a Euro M535i, then go to my local dealership and order all the rear suspension parts and be fine?
2. Most of the small bits seem to be the same across the E24/E28 cars but, the coils are different.
3. Will M springs, 33531130723, from a euro M535i work?
4. Bilstein HD?

The biggest source of confusion, even after reading many posts on this subject, is what spring to use with what shocks.

My parts list on FCP Euro:

Grunt,
I printed out REALOEM diagram and went to by local BMW dealer parts department, asked them to confirm the requirements for the conversion. They went into their shop, had their head mechanic configure parts required. I purchased all the parts from them, conversion went smoothly. I have a few bolts left over which I returned for full credit.

I have 89 635CsiA, Bilstein B6 all around and BMW springs.

If using BMW Springs and not aftermarket what would be the best option?

The issue is I need the sensor circled in the picture that is leaking. They are no longer available new world wide and a used one potentially would leak just like the one on my car now. I am infuriated that a $99.00 sensor/switch is forcing me to ditch the entire original rear suspension. I tried sealing the switch with epoxy resin with no success.

And I am in the process of trying to sell the car so, I need it fixed. The good thing is most people probably prefer that the rear has been converted to normal coils and Bilstein shocks as they know the issues with maintaining the original SLS set-up.

Grunt,

I have been rebuilding SLS pumps for 5 years, and yours is the first that I have ever seen leak at this location.
I have two old sensor/switches, but they are not 115, they are both 110.

I only say 115 because that was what is listed on Real OEM.

You wouldn't want to sell one of them by any chance?

PM Sent

The plastic piece on the end of the switch where the electrical connectors are would actually freely turn inside the metal housing and was leaking fluid. I was told that this should not turn freely.

Jay is a great source for SLS help. You might also watch ebay for use pumps. I have 2-3 on the shelf for parts. Paid about 50-150 for each.
My latest SLS disappointment is the accumulators. Replaced them in 2011, and they are bad again. $300+/each now. Still not considering converting to standard setup.
