Front end shimmy

Post by dks »

Here's my saga about this issue.

Over the past 6-12 months I've battling the dreaded shimmy.

My experience of this is typically under braking where the car makes an arbitrary decision on which way it wants to make a bit of a dive (not sure I really want my wife to drive it like this) but also pretty vague steering especially at 80-100kmph.

The general consensus on this forum seemed to be cactus thrust bushes. I'd had a good look at mine and they seemed okay.

Anyway, I'd had a gut full and decided to just change the bushes even if they looked okay. I got some of the Meyle HD bushes and have just had them pressed in. I chose these because I thought they might last a bit longer than the standard ones.

Well - what a difference. It's just like I remembered what she was like.

I think I was a bit slow to come to the conclusion I needed to but we got there eventually.

So, if anyone is thinking about addressing the shimmy issue, look at getting the bushes replaced sooner rather than later.
