Fitting brakes E31 Brembo fronts + E34 540i/M5 Rears

Post by 6er_Guy »

I have a set of front brembo calipers for a e31 840ci/850ci with new oem discs and a set of rear e34 540i calipers with new oem discs. I'm unsure what more will be required to fit them onto my e24. I've been told that the discs might need to be skimmed and need the carriers from the e31 and e34 but not sure if this is actually true. Will the discs and calipers not bolt straight onto the original e24 set up?

The rears will fit straight on without any modification as this is the same same setup I have on my 88 Highline. As for the fronts they may fit straight on, but try searching for James Sohl's (sohlman?) brake article on the site. I think James fitted these Bremo's at some point, but later removed them as they may have been too fierce. I have the front calipers from the 540 and both those and the rears are well matched and require no modifications - they just look like the originals have been increased in size slightly. Brake performance is very good and extremely progressive and easy to manage.

pardon me for stating the b.obvious but if you fit bigger brakes then your choice of wheels is more limited than otherwise.

They fit straight on - no separate carrier for the Brembos, no need to skim discs. This is what was fitted to my M.

The only 16" wheels that I found to fit were Hartges - even Style 8s from the earlier 850CSi won't fit.

Super noob question, but has anyone done a big brake set up? 14 inch disk brakes to be exact. :-k

Are you running the oem discs from the E31 and E34? Can you please tell me the disc dimensions or part number for yours? I've got 17" Alpina wheels on mine at the moment, just scraped the old metrics

From memory (nerdy, sad memory at that), the oem discs are 324mm diameter and require bending of the backplates to fit.

I ran e46 m3 disk when I done the big e31 brakes on the e36 m3. Went on with non modifications so more than likely they will fit e24 modifying the dust plates which is pretty simple

What was the size measurements of the discs you ran? I've removed the dust plates on mine
