power steering filter

Post by tmoretta »

I am in the process of swapping out/rebuilding the power steering pump in my '88 M6. I ordered a new filter for the 3 rib covered filter. When I remove the filter I see no filter present in the can , other than the screen. Could it be none belongs there, or is mine missing?

You should have the following in the power steering reservoir from top down: c-clip, bowl shaped metal strainer, thick washer, short spring, metal gauze filter (like an upside mushroom), c-clip, long thin spring, round metal cover plate, disposable filter with a removable rubber seal/gasket at the bottom. Without all these in place the oil won't be filtered properly. Sourcing the rubber seal on the filter was hard work as this is not listed as an E24 part even though it is required.
Filter is 32411128167 and rubber seal is 32411137778. Ideally you would want a rubber seal on the top and the bottom of the filter, but I don't think there is enough room.
Good luck.

just checking on this guys, when adding a magnet to the reservoir as per Brucey, does that go on top of the second 'mushroom' filter as described below?

Also just for fun, any ideas how one of my car's POs will have done this to the lid? (i have since replaced it....)

Fellow BC members,

The photo shows a Brake Booster Servo, with all of the debris inside from a Fiber PSP filter that disintegrated.
