ABS sensors - a recap?

Post by Danny Wilde »

Hi to all! :D as the title suggests I'd like to replace all four ABS sensors for my 9/86 653CSi

After a long search through the posts I gather these should be the correct serials to look for, this is a copy and paste recap of the whole thing and I'd be very grateful if anyone could be so kind of letting me know if I got it right or not :-? :

front sensors:
(2x) 34521179981 (supersedes 34521154064) (Bosch: 0265001038)
For the front ones the E23 ones are also compatible: (2x) 61121365275

rear sensors:
"From post late '86 the rears are different to the fronts and they are handed left and right. Before that they're the same part number"…..

left rear sensor: (1x) 34521155709
right rear sensor: (1x) 34521155710

Mine is 9/1986, concerning the rear ones should I go for the left and right handed or with the previous ones (same for left and right)?

Thanks for your kind help guys, :D

wow that is a big engine you have got there....

I'll double check the pns but before you get too excited there may be a problem; in recent times folk have struggled to buy the correct front parts for post 5/82 (i.e. E28 based) E24 builds. One way around this is to use E28 type sensors; these are more readily available and differ mainly in wire length. IIRC they can be made to fit either by

a) rerouting the cable in the upright or

b) splicing more cable into the sensor.

The latter would probably be my first choice; the joints can be placed inside the engine bay where they won't see the worst of the weather, plus it isn't easy to see how you could shorten the wire route around the upright without increasing the risk of snagging or tugging the wire as the suspension moves or the steering turns.

cheers

for front sensors I am getting

34521178981
and
34521178982

(different wire lengths each side I think?) which is not the same as the number you quoted. The date ranges are cobblers; only post 5/82 models were fitted with ABS I think, yet the date range is shown as going back to 1977.

34 52 1 155 709
and
34 52 1 155 710

are shown for rear sensors sept '86 on.
34 52 1 154 045 is shown for 5/82 to 9/86 rear sensors

if you enter your chassis number into an online ETK it should give you the correct choice of sensor only. If in doubt image serach for each pn and compare with what you have got.

FWIW I would not bother to change sensors unless the old ones were definitely proven faulty.

cheers

Thanks Brucey, this recap is priceless! \:D/ I also checked for the rear ones on the realoem.com site with my chassis number and yes it has the 34521155709 and 34521155710 left & right ones.

Thanks a lot as always,
best
