I just bought a 89 635, it still has the self leveling rear suspension. Everything appears to be in place but there is no fluid in the tank and I can’t hear the pump running, Can someone
Give me some troubleshooting help on that system, thanks in advance!

Are there any hoses connected to the rear shocks? Is the rear end of the car sagging?

If both no then it has been mechanically eliminated.

If both yes, I would have a tendency to eliminate and go to conventional suspension

Do a google search and look for hits on the e28 m5 forums. Should be some troubleshooting threads. As I recall from the e28 m5 I had, if the pressure canisters fail you can lose fluid and the car will constantly hunt for height. I replaced them and filled it with fluid and it worked fine. I thought it was a cool system. My M6 had it removed by the PO.

Also, there is a link on the rear sway bar that activates the system. You coud try and fill it with fluid and activate that lever and see what it does or see if power goes to the motor. CHeck fuses.

I have a 1988 M6. Under the trunk below the car , the link off the swaybar connects to a little box, the size of a package of cigarette. It is easy to remove. I don;t remember exactly what was wrong. I think a soldering joint was bad. See picture.
As far as the fluid, a light hydraulic oil should be fine.
