manual tranny on 1985 635 oil change
any suggestion on what oil to use for manual tranny thanks
the time I saw your eyes I fell in love with you my bmw
Thanx, Chris, good to know.
But, and not to slight anyone, because I have gotten a lot of great help here,
I know I read, either here or 'FirstFives.Org' that someone drained & filled
their tranny with a lighter grade than recommended by the factory but,
it made too much noise. So, they drained & filled it with a heavier weight & all was well.
I just hope someone with that experience will chime in.
Of course I don't remember what the different weights were!
I know I'm not that crazy,,,,Greg
Ps,,,,I'll go to 'FirstFives' and ask that question,
but, they're not too busy anymore.
PPs,,,,Okay, now, we just gotta wait for an answer.

Mannual tranny - hard shifting when cold
Since I've bought my 1980's 635 CSi with sport manual transmission I got hard shifting after start up in between 1-2 and 2-3. When warmed up after few minutes driving the shifting is smooth enough for me except reverse. Gear box is filled up with Valvoline 80W-90 - it's all I know about the fluid. No idea about API class (GL 4 or 5) nor oil base - supposly it's mineral.
It took me 2 evenenigs to do my homework suggested by Chris (links to bigcoupe and bimmerforums). I'm not the top student and like to ask for advises which oil will solve the problem of cold hard shift not giving the noisy work after warming up or excessive leakege. I've checked some oils available at domestic market (excepting Redline) - for the main features see attached table. Which one is the best for me?
When oil meets both GL-4 and GL-5 specification it's safe for "yellow metal" parts in the gear box - am I right?
Low viscosity @40°C will provide smooth shifting after start-up and higher viscosity @100°C will couse more silent work - am I right?
Higher Viscosity Index means the better oils is - right?
Due to avoid the leakege Miller's semisynthethic should be OK but the temptation is to use synthetic Shell Spirax or Motul Gear 300 - low viscosity when cold and higher when heated up. The german producer Ravenol recommends Ravenol MZG mineral 80W to use at mid 80's BMW 6ers.
I'll be thankful for advises.
