Re: Rotor Arm; Lot-o-Harm?
It's cheaper to replace the rotor than to suffer tracking inside the cap. "Mind the Gap" applies here.

Brucey I'm glad this thread was resurrected as I had never seen it. But I do want to say that you are broken car mechanic God! As many times as I have patched something up to get me home (starting with a 64 Beetle when I was a kid) I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have thought of this fix.
6er Rotors will keep going until there's pretty much nothing left and then it's way too late. So, I suggest any time there are running issues to be sure and pull the dizzy cap! My car sat for almost a year because I assumed the rotor and cap were "good"!

Found this while doing a tune-up for a friend....car was running fine. Tune-up was a prophylactic treatment. No doubt it would have continued to work, but it's scary to find such things.

Re: Rotor Arm; Lot-o-Harm?
mine must have looked like that at one stage too. If it is like mine, the pieces won't fit together exactly perfectly, suggesting that the failure has been driven by internal stresses in the moulding.
FWIW my car manifested no running issues whatsoever until the last mile and a half before it stopped completely.
Definitely a consumable item....
cheers
