4 HP 22 Output Shaft Seal - Need Advice

Post by sansouci »

Guys,
After an underbody inspection this weekend of the Garage Queen, I saw some congealed goo around the rear trans support so I am guessing that the output shaft seal ought to be replaced. Since the car hasn't been a DD for years, I'm not surprised at the congealed condition.
I'm looking for "how to" posts, websites, etc that would either guide me through the job (I DON"T HAVE A LIFT) or suggest that I let a shop do the work to replace a minor seal. My BC search returned a gazillion posts so that was of limited help.
Also, is the only fill through the dipstick?
Many thanks,
Ken

Ken,

Your 84 should have the 3HP22 trans as the 4HP22 was introduced to the US in 85. Possible someone may have swapped it though.

In any case, look to see how the front of the driveshaft connects to the trans. You will have to remove the transmission side of the coupling after removing the exhaust (not fun) and DS (you need the clearance to remove the trans output flange). All components best removed while on a lift - really not enough room underneath to do any work without lifting the car at least 1 foot off the ground.

If the leak is really minor I would have a tendency to leave it as is until I have other work in the area.

Yes - dipstick tube is the fill port.

Ralph,
That's more "removal" than I want to undertake. BTW, it is a 4HP22. The black label said that along with BMW P/N 10430101126 and ZF p/n 117844
VIN is 6997510 to decode the build date which was 9/84 (per realoem). The PO was not hands on. Strictly a "dealer only" service customer so I'm sure the box is original.

Somewhere I read that there was a new, longer dipstick so I'll look for that new p/n.

I'll just watch the fluid level to be sure that is not an uncontrolled leak.
Thanks,
Ken
