Does not look like anything I have ever seen in any of our 6er. Maybe something that the PO put in? If it was a BMW part it would have a part number on it

Doesn't look at all like an OEM BMW part. Maybe it came with that aftermarket hot-air intake?

Look for the bolt hole since this is a large bolt, it should be quite visible.

They almost look like the manifold brace and hose carrier pieces (that aren't normally joined) put together with that bolt. The brace that goes from the manifold to the lower block, plus the bracket that's tucked way under the manifold and supports the heater hose. I know they don't look exactly like those part, but similar.

Did the two pieces come off together, or did you put that bolt through them?

Get that cone filter out of your engine bay and put the stock airbox back in! Your intake is now sucking in hotter air than it did when the airbox was routed to suck air from the partitioned compartment behind the right headlight.

I was gonna mention the 'hot air intake' but, I left it to you guys! =D>

If you add an 'L' shaped hot air deflector it might give you more of what you want?
But, what you have now is defeating your intent!
Unless all you want is more air, which includes hot air?

Another way is to build a funnel from the rear of the filter to the hole in your headlight backing plate.
You'll have more air & colder.
You can tilt it to point at the backing plate.

See what you started?
Good luck,,,,Greg

I thought the 2 halves of the bracket came off as you see it- with the bolt in the config you see. The bolt is large enough to maybe be one of the 4 engine mount bolts, where this might well be from. I will dig in and look again.

A PO took out the airbox, and the cone filter was pretty crusty so I recently found a cheap replacement. If I was to go back to an airbox, it would be more for the whole "staying true to the originality" thing, than worrying about the couple of Hp I might gain by having cooler intake air.

I have seen a few different brackets of this sort that are on/around the LH engine mount/intake manifold/dipstick area. IIRC the curved end could be either to support the heater hose or to support the wiring harness where it goes to the starter motor.

What I don't understand is how you ended up with a bolt that size left over. There ought to be hole with no bolt left in it, which ought to be obvious.

BTW wherever the bracket touches anything else, there will be a 'witness' where the metal is cleaner/less corroded. This may well help you to identify where the bracket was originally. The end of this bracket looks very much like it was originally bolted to something of distinctive shape.

cheers

Along the lines of Brucy's comments, the portion of the bracket that looks like a little man has a clean "witness mark" (under where you now have a bolt) that sure looks like where a washer sat with a bolt going through it.

The voice of embarrassed experience forces me to ask. Are you sure that the bracket came off of THAT car?
Else: look for an area with similar gunk on it (a slow, persistent oil leak helps with this)
Best of luck,

http://2009.bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/ ... s_fixings/

Got it!
it is 2 brackets. the bolt is one of the 4 oil filter headpiece bolts, and the larger bracket helps support the dipstick tube - there was a clampstrap on the dipstick tube also looking for something to bolt to. And as Brucey said, the other half of the bracket holds the 12v wire/ bundle headed to the starter - that one juts out in mid air but there's a small slot waiting for a ziptie around the wire.
I missed the open bolthole since my fat new 12v battery cable was laying right over the hole.
appreciate the help and inspiration to get back under that Intake manifold !

Now that that's solved you can go ahead and return the intake to the more efficient standard system that it had.

The ONLY improvement you can make to a standard M30 is a set of properly designed extractor headers.

And a conversion to manual if you have an auto.
