Thermostat frozen in stat housing

Post by phil »

Hi folks, I am in the process of doing a coolant flush and check over the cooling system on my 1987 Euro 635. It holds temperature nicely at about 11 o'clock on the temp gauge but the last item to check was the thermostat - how difficult should it be to get the stat out of the housing once you have the cover off - mine didn't want to budge - its either the original since it rolled of the assembly line, or someone has used locktite.

Should plop right out. There is just a rubber o-ring between the stat and the housing. There should not be any gasket sealer, loctite or Goop. But I can't speak for what the PO may have done.

Hi Sansouci, yep I figured it should pop out relatively easy, but I guess I'll have to bust it out - I was figuring it might still be ok and reuse it, but the fact that its seized in probably means it could be the original and the engine has 138000 kms on the clock so probably due for a new one.

Thanks

Yes, do replace it. The seal is now compromised!
Make sure the new one matches though.
Good luck,,,,Greg

Thermostats definitely get seized in there. For my M6, i have to buy the thermostat and seal from Pelican or some other BMW specialist. The big chain shops do not have the right part number references. They get the right seal but the wrong thermostat. If you have yours apart, take the thermostat in and compare to the new part.

Every thing you wanted to know about thermostat part numbers but were afraid to ask (scroll down to the listing):

Thanks guys, I live in New Zealand so just identifying other various parts to put an order with Pelican parts and make it worth while regarding freight. The car is in pretty good shape (apart from the usual (minor) rust in the front fenders and around the left rear wheel arc). As a matter of interest, how do you remove the temp sensor from the air dam?
