Post by asoderstroms »

Hi, how did i know If it's something wrong with my obc? This is how it looks when i turn the key, nothing is happening If i press any buttons only km/miles reacts?
I have read about that the obc had a start lock system and i think that this is the problem why my car don´t want to start?
Sorry for bad english hope you could help me to get this beautiful car on the road again.

I'm less familiar with this (early) model OBC, but it should explain how it works in the owner's manual.

IIRC if the code function is active, it will say 'code' on the display or something? Your present display looks like the 'range' to me. You ought to be able to cycle through the OBC functions using the LH stalk on the control column; pressing the end button repeatedly should cycle through the functions if it is working normally.

cheers

Some good info on the early OBC. It's not as common, and a little less obvious how to use all the functions...

TEMP/1/temp ARR/2/ank SPEED/3/geschw
MPG/4/verbr RANGE/5/reichw EXIT/6/ausf
TIMER/7/zeit DIST/8/dist CODE/9/code
START/CE/korr/start STOP/0/stop LOCK/TIME/lock/uhr

As its basic function the onboard computer shows the time with the accuracy of a quartz clock.
Note: All keys have 2 functions.

If four decimal points flash (no figures) when a button is pressed this means that the electrical circuit has been interrupted. For instance, by removing or disconnecting the car's battery. The correct time must then be reset. After this the remaining functions of the onboard computer can also be operated again.
Before a numerical value input is made, the key marked with the desired function must be pressed. After the input, wait for the digital display to go out briefly (approx. 4 seconds). The input value has then been accepted by the computer, which is then ready for further inputs or outputs.
CHANGEOVER SWITCH KM/MILES:

The digital display can be either in metric units or in Anglo-American units.

KEY "TIME":
For resetting or correcting the time readout. Press the key repeatedly until a zero is displayed at the far right. Then press the keys for the correct time in the order the digits normally appear. Wait for the digital readout to go out briefly. Then start the clock (for instance when a radio time signal corresponding to the input setting is heard) by pressing the START key. When the ignition is at "0" (off) you can obtain a time display by pressing the TIME key.

KEY "LOCK":
In addition to the time, any other desired display can be held by pressing this key. No other numerical inputs are then possible. The green indicator lamp at the right of the key will light up. To revert to the normal time display, press the key again.

KEY "CE":
This key cancels the incorrect input of another key, but retains previous values.

KEY "START":
This sets the stopwatch timer in motion and the green indicator lamp at the left of the key lights up. The readout is in seconds and tenths. After 1minute it switches to minutes and seconds. After 1 hour it switches to hours and minutes.
After 8 seconds the display reverts automatically to real time, but the stopwatch timer continues to run and can be displayed for 8 seconds at a time by pressing the key again. Press LOCK for an uninterrupted elapsed time display.

KEY "0/STOP":
This halts the stopwatch timer. The final time is displayed for 8 seconds. To recall a previously measured time from the stopwatch timer press the key again.
To cancel an input or a function first press the corresponding input/function key. Then press the STOP key. The indicating lamp will go out.

KEY "1/TEMP":
To check outside temperature. The red indicating lamp at the left of the key lights up or flashes for 8 seconds at temperatures below +3C (37F). Regardless of the function being displayed at the time a chime signal is sounded when the temperature drops below 3C (37F). The indicating lamp begins to flash and the actual temperature is faded for 8 seconds. This also applies when the ignition keys is turned from "0" (off) to "1" (on, accessory) and the temperature is under 3C (37F).

KEY "2/ARR":
To obtain probable time of arrival during a journey after supplying the computer with the total journey distance (by pressing the DIST key). Display is retained for 8 seconds.

KEY "3/SPEED":
A maximum desired road speed input can be supplied to the computer. The red indicator lamp at the right of the key will light up. A chime andflashing indicator lamp will then warn the driver if he exceeds the desired speed. To cancel the speed warning press SPEED and STOP in that order.
To obtain average speed since the SPEED and START keys were pressed (in that order) press this key again. Display appears for 8 seconds.

KEY "4/MPG":
To supply a maximum rate of fuel consumption to the computer. The red indicator light at the left of the key will light up. It will flash to warn the driver that his rate of fuel consumption is excessive. To cancel the fuel consumption warning press the MPG and STOP keys (in that order).
Press this key to obtain average fuel consumption since pressing the MPG and START keys (in that order). The display appears for 8 seconds. Below a road speed of 20 km/h four decimal points flash instead.

KEY "5/RANGE":
To obtain probable range with fuel remaining in tank. Display appears for 8 seconds. If range is less than 15 km, four decimal points flash.
If battery is allowed to go flat, correction will be necessary. Drive the car until the fuel tank is more or less empty and the fuel warning light has been on continuously for 3 km (2 miles). Refuel and then the display will be correct.

KEY "6/EXIT":
For input of an intermediate journey target in km or miles. For instance, the distance to a particular freeway or similar main road exit. Maximum distance is 999 km. The green indictor lamp at the right of the key lights up. A short distance before the target distance is reached a chime signal sounds, after which the green indicating lamp flashes until the remaining distance has been covered.
Press this key to obtain a readout of the remaining distance to the intermediate journey target. Display appears for 8 seconds.
To cancel the intermediate target reminder press the EXIT and STOP keys (in that order).

KEY "7/TIMER":
If the car does not have an independent heater this function is used to sound an alarm chime at the programmed time.
If the car does have an independent heater this function is used for the input of a time at which (for example) the independent heater should be switched on. The green indicating lamp at the left of the key lights up. It goes out if the ignition is turned to "0" (off). After the heater has been switched on the indicating lamp flashes during the 30 minute operating period, after which the heater is switched off. Direct switching on or off are achieved by pressing the TIME and START or TIME and STOP keys in succession.

KEY "8/DIST":
Input of a target distance (max 9999 km) so that the arrival time can be obtained by pressing the ARR key. Press this key to obtain the remaining distance from the end of the journey. Display appears for 8 seconds. To cancel the distance memory press DIST and STOP (in that order.

KEY "9/CODE":
Input any code number with the ignition key at "1" (on, accessory). Turning the ignition to "2" (on, ready to start) cancels the input. Turning the ignition to "0" (off) stores the code and activates the anti-start device. The green indicator lamp next to the key lights up, but goes out when the ignition is at "0". When the key is next turned from "0" to "1" the onboard computer displays "0000" and the green indicator lamp is turned on. After the correct code number input has been supplied the anti-start device is turned off and the display shows the real time and the indicating lamp goes out. If an incorrect input is supplied three times in succession, or an attempt to start is made three times when the computer has been supplied with incorrect information, an alarm will sound for 30 seconds, and the anti-start device will remain active

My OBC was causing me problems, car wouldnt start intermittently. Really hard to pin down the fault.. finally nailed it as a problem with the OBD relay box behind the passenger dash (Right hand drive car).

Bypassed the OBC relay box by connecting pins 3+4 (green ones) together and am now able to leave the relay box unplugged. Pretty common fault apparently.

Symptoms were random starting issues (would spin but no spark or fuel pump). Also random OBC alarm noises, the really annoying to the neighbour alarm thats just infront of the firewall.

Not sure if this is your problem, however OBC quirks can cause weird non start faults. Easy one to check, little relay box in dash has 2x mole plus (like from old PC's), one of them has 2x green wires and is marked pins 3+4... connect them together and turn the key and see if fixed.

Be aware that the above will be for late model electronics. For an '83 model, you would need to bridge terminals 14 and 15 on C1 on the OBC relay module. This merely bypasses the OBC to the main relay, and will not disable the OBC horn.

And with this way i will try If the obc is broke?

I have read the instructions about obc but it doesn't matter because nothing is happening anyway when i press the buttoms.

In searching the forums for my current OBC issue, I found this thread though not exactly my issue. In fact, I can't find anything online about what is happening. If this is dead to the previous posters I may start a new one.

Anyway, I have an '83 633 and recently replaced the glass fuse in the OBC after it never working in the 10 years I've had the car (never thought about looking inside to find the fuse with broken filament). After replacing it a week ago, all seemed well and it was fully functional in terms of the display.

Today, out of nowhere the display starting cycling numbers across the screen, like 1, 2, 0,0 one after the other quickly. There was an actual ticking noise coming from the OBC housing. It is fairly rapid, and loud. I can put my finger on the housing and feel it. I recorded a video and can upload it online if anyone thinks that will help further.

Is this unit now dying or something else?

UPDATE:
I pulled the fuse (22) and the OBC noise stopped but the display unit still cycles the numbers, even when the car is off.
