Electric windows.

Post by ron »

All windows work with the door switch "open" but, with the doors shut, nothing! ('84 635).

Any ideas?

Open door and ignition off; windows should work.
Closed door and ignition off; windows shouldn't work.
Open or shut door and ignition on; windows should work.

Wlthough I can't find a wiring diagram for it the window relay most be positive controlled via the interior light relay/door switch with the ignition off, and directly through the ignition switch with the doors closed.

This is how the system is supposed to work. I have obviously got no live feed from the ignition switch but I am unable to find anything on various wiring diagrams.

Can anyone help to diagnose the problem?

TIA

PS Not sure if the USA versions windows work on the door switches.

Still searching for you on this one - I think you might have stumbled upon a last great E24 mystery as all the available wiring diagrams are based on the US cars that don't have the 'ignition off, doors open, windows work' option.

Sorted! There are 3 relays forward of the glove box (R/H drive car) which were VERY rusty and did NOT want to come out.

However, Kevin (sharkfan), persevered and, apart from a screwdriver inflicted injury, they have all been replaced.

One was definitely for the windows and one for the interior light delay system which now works.

We eventually managed to get a full set of instruments working (we did have around 10 sets to play with).

The only thing not now working are the instrument panel lights ( anyone got any ideas?) so will have to use a torch (flashlight) for night driving.

Thanks to Kev for his contortions in the boot and down by the pedals.

I'm definitely getting too old for crawling around in confined spaces so I left Kev to it and went and cooked the curry.

Check the rheostat on the light switch.
I had this problem on my series one when i purchased it and drove it 325 miles home in the dark ........When I did the repair during restoration it turned out to be a very poor oxidised conection on one of the terminals in the underside of the fuse holders. It took a while to trace that one.I cannot recall the actual just now but will consult my resto diary and come back.
Along with the dash lights the rear lh side light and number plate lamps were also in the faulty circuit .

The RUSTY relays. There was another small one in the same condition!

No. The water came in through the loom and grommet on the L/H side. I've since re-sealed it with black silicone.

For all the panel lights I would go with checking the voltage to the light switch dimmer connections then checking with a known good switch (I remember we swapped another switch in but I wasn't sure it was good either).

The curry and company was excellent btw 8)

Ah ha! This is what I was looking for! Puzzled email refers. My project car has the bare remains of the tall relay with it's rusty backside to the camera half-out of the base (no case on mine, and in very poor order). I think this must be the interior light delay.

Next to it is an empty relay socket with three green/red wires connected to it. I don't know what this does.

There is another "ordinary" relay as you'd find for the horn etc which is attached to the side of the accessory connector which clicks when starter turned to 1. I assume this is the starter inhibitor relay for the autobox.

Did you have any thoughts re. the "Other" relay above, the one with the green/red wires?

Thanks,

Rob
