sad day, goodbye to an M635

Post by Finally6 »

Friday was a gloomy day, and not just because it was raining. I was out paddle boarding and I got 2 voicemails, one from my mechanic and the other from the local police department. I went to the shop first and this is what is saw:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/6606829 ... 3584551624

I have many questions, but my main one is this: can the M88 and transmission be transplanted into my 81 635 right hand drive? The 81's engine was pulled a few years ago with the intent of refreshing it, that hasn't happened yet. I don't even know the buyback on this yet, but I am covering all my bases. All the while I wait for the insurance companies to go through their processes.

Well, that sux, even though I can't view the link (not a member of Face Plant [-X ) I can only imagine what carnage took place :(

Regarding your question about installing an M88 into an '81 RHD model, ya might wanna contact shipper01, at least take a look at this linky :-k

viewtopic.php?f=29&t=26300

This is actually an S38B38 engine swap, but he's covered all the bases, which would likely not be a lot different than what you are thinking :-?

Commiserations my friend .
Heartbreaking to be confronted with that .
I sincerely hope that in as short a time as possible it all gets sorted out and you can replace it with another equally nice car and get back to enjoying E24 ownership again.
Good luck

Wow, that's really a sad situation - not sure what I'd do in your place, but I'm hoping the insurance will make you at least monetarily whole.

Bobby, The "official" story is that he realized he missed his turn and tried to turn quickly into the same shop where my 6 was residing. I cry BS, but without a camera pointed right at the driver, it's impossible to tell the truth. Thanks, Eric

Oh no, that's terrible. I'm very sorry for you. Such severe damage too.

How crushed & pissed off you must be. There are so many other regular, every day cars all around there (ie. easily fixed cars), its such a bugger that your tough, classic, collectible car is the one that got hit so hard. Good luck with it mate.

That's awful. I'm sorry to see it.

Good luck with resolution from the insurance companies.

There have been a few high dollar M635 sales in the last year, and some currently listed at decent pricing. Hope you are made as whole as possible.

For the swap, I'm not sure if you will have clearance issues with the header. Do RHD M635's have the header? Otherwise I don't see an issue with the transplant, afaik.

Good luck,

Ray

Yes, the M88 and 5 speed transmission can be transplanted into an e12 chassis'd 635. You do not even need to swap out the rear subframe. Just get a speed signal simulator. Here's the link to my e12 with the S38B38 in it.

I noticed the Jeep had a temporary tag on the front. Looks like the new owner was completely unfamiliar with the driving characteristics of a Grand Cherokee (I own one), or maybe unfamiliar with safe driving at all! That's just awful. So sad for you.

It's no wonder there are garage queens. Makes me not want to drive mine at all! In this case I can't help but suspect distracted driving. Truly sorry for your loss, so sad.

I've seen an 81 shell with an M engine in it. However

a) the LHD exhaust manifold wants to be in the same place as the RHD steering column
b) the '81 will have a pair of vacuum servos for the brakes and these won't be able to stay in the usual place, not with an M-engine in there too.
c) the wiring harness is fundamentally different and there will be quite a bit of fiddling about to get it all to work

rotten luck about the shunt BTW.

According to that copart link, the whole thing got sold. You'll have to deal with whoever bought it to get the engine.

The buyback was extremely high, much higher than I anticipated. I didn't want to get into a situation where someone would promise to buy it and then back out, etc... I really wanted to part it out myself, but I just couldn't feasibly do it considering the condition it was in and no location to keep it while parting it out.
