1985 M635CSi exhaust help please

Post by jl6er »

Hello everyone; need some help from the M635 gurus of the board. I just purchased a 67,000 mile 1985 M635CSi euro. It arrived yesterday and it's incredible...my goal finally attained! Having some issues regarding the exhaust, though. There are two large holes in the muffler...upon further inspection of the rest of the exhaust, it appears the car also has a massive catalytic converter installed. The car was imported to Florida in the spring of 1985 and was properly federalized with documentation, however I did not expect to find the car equipped with a cat, nor was I advised from the previous owner. Can someone please confirm what I am saying by checking the photos below? I am positive the car is a genuine M635 with the M88/3 motor, but I need some suggestions on what my options are for the exhaust. Ideally I'd like to return it to the original stock system, which are straight pipes, correct? If so, any idea on the availability of this OEM system? I took a look at RealOEM and it appears that the muffler at least is NLA. :( I really would prefer to avoid any custom systems, as (in my opinion) there is no greater sound than that of a proper M635CSi at full throttle!

Any feedback/direction here would be much appreciated!

*Note that I will not be doing this work on my own - the car will be brought to a reputable local shop that I have taken my other 6 (1988 635CSi) to for over 20 years.

Thanks guys,
Justin

Nice car. Which red is that?
That is not a Catalytic converter, it's a resonator. And, that is the stock Euro exhaust set up. Leave it alone if you do not have to pass an emission inspection. However if you do, you'll need to have that resonator cut out and replaced with a Cat. Some guys have a track-pipe set up with a removable Cat.
Does your car have an O2 sensor added? Also look at the DME (ECU) to see if a wire was added to the loom during the federalization. No O2 makes a Cat moot.
If you're looking for a new rear muffler, I have a brand new one still in the box for sale. PM me for details.

ah you bought the one one Ebay....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1985-BMW-M6-M63 ... 7675.l2557

US $47,105.00

VIN - WBAEE310X01051293

Nice price I hope mine sells for that.

Looks like it needs some exhaust and suspension work.

You've come to the right place for questions.

You will need to order exhaust from a European dealer.... US part places will not be able to order euro exhaust BMW NA will not ship them here.

Your new car has no 02 nor catalytic converters... it's dirty Euro car.

18121309004 rear muffler $470.05
18122225082 front muffler $501.95
18211176390 rear can clamp $12.12

Plus shipping to the US from Europe

That is a outstanding M635 sounds like it has a good home.

I did a check for availability with these exhaust parts in ATLAS, looks like the rear muffler is not in stock anywhere but is not listed as NLA.
The part # has a superseded part and I can't verify what that is as I am not at work to check, but it might be the rear muffler listed for 6/87 and newer.
It is available in the fatherland, there are 28 of them # 18121311921.
You should be able to order parts from a U.S. dealer but they are blocked and require proof of registered ownership paperwork to be filled out.
Most dealers do not want to just do the job as it is a bit more work for them.
I have "tuned up" my parts department and they get parts for all my euro models without complaint, after all.. a sale is a sail!!

Let me know if you have a struggle and we can have Rich make the order and verify the superseded part..

This company is a great source for parts, especially the Euro-only parts:

Blunttech.com can order what you need as well.

I went with a SuperSprint complete system.

Nice looking sixxer. I have one very similar, only difference being the black interior in mine. Well, that and yours is in much better looking condition!

Another source is Walloth & Nesch. I just placed an order for the front silencer, 18122225082, for 405.46 Euro (no VAT) plus shipping.

Welcome to the board!

That giant resonator reduces exhaust sound tremendously.

Can you post a video on YouTube of your car with the Supersprint exhaust? I would like to hear the sound before I purchase the system. How would you describe it? Did you order the 304SS or the mild steel system?

Thanks!

Hi Bernard,

It's mild steel. I didn't see that SS was offered at the time (in 2010 I think).

I'm away from the car for a couple weeks; I'll try and capture the sound for you. I have tried before but with little success for whatever reason. It is a bit louder than stock and has a nice mellow tone. I'll be driving it a good 900 miles next week and may have more sentient observations!

Cheers,

Hi Bernard,

I've not forgotten yet!

I attempted a few audio recordings and... they all sound awful!

I'll try and see if I can capture some decent audio with a proper camera, or something else.

Or maybe a phone app that will allow less ambient high frequency noise through.

Anyway, all hope is not yet lost! Just... most of it!:D

Cheers,

Thanks !! I see that the SuperSprint mild steel system is not offered anymore. I would have to go with the SS304 system. Thank you for your efforts. I'll stay tuned if you succeed !

I hope Ray can get a decent recording of his car. I've heard it many times, been behind him on drives and such. It sounds very, very nice.

Thanks Ken, I think so too.

Which is why I'm always disappointed when I attempt to record and then play back and listen :x

I installed an audio editor on the phone, so I'm going to try again.

... I had Donald drive the E24 up here to VA, following me in the M2. The M635 ate two of the almost-new Sumitomos. Tread separation. I'm back to Proxes. I never liked those Sumis...

Yes, Bill told me about the two-tire-at-once failure. I'm glad it was no worse than that. Could have been really bad.
I wish you were still down here. I'd help with the recording. Pretty much forget the phone. The mic in the phone doesn't have the dynamic range you need to record the exhaust tones.

Eric,
Did you get the centre section fitted ? Just fitted this and a rear silencer to my car.

Whom did you order it through? In search of the center section myself. While I get a lot of support at my local BMW dealer, they seem to have a hard time ordering Euro parts.
Thanks!

I have found that schmiedmann.com is a good source for my '85 Euro Shark. Ordered from them a couple of times and have been happy.
I'm planning on replacing my exhaust later this year and, if I go with a stock replacement, will order from here.
