Good Wire Source

Post by gte619n »

Hey guys,

I'm replacing some connectors in the M635 and I'm afraid that some of these wires are just chowdered and brittle well past it. They look to be ~22 gauge to me. Does anyone have a source for nice, silicone insulated wires in various colors? When I find them on the googles the nice stuff is only available in rolls for ~$80/per. Makes the colors difficult to source!

Thanks!

Amazon has various wire assortments:

I bought a similar kit of 12awg to rewire my horns, fogs, and headlights:

Sounds good.

I ordered a box of 22awg and 20awg Striveday. It said silicon so we'll see how it is. I went with the Striveday because it had a purple/white/grey/brown/orange color scheme that I think might match my sensors a little better.

Will report back!

Two sources I have used. Although both are based in the UK, paying by credit card / PayPal and shipping by Royal Post are reliable and reasonable. To be honest I was using the wire for my vintage Lotus; not sure if the wire body & tracer colours suit BMW colours or not? I used the Thin Wall stuff. Sold by the metre in a wide variety of colours in the popular sizes...

Both suppliers also have an excellent selection of connectors, terminals, tools, etc. Pretty much rewired my whole car with their stuff.

Here is a US supplier I have used for stuff as well, but not sure if they sell much thin wall wire in that many colours by the metre/foot. Worth a call perhaps....

OK, not to state the obvious, but British wiring isn't known for the highest quality or reliability \:D/ We all know the Lucas Prince of Darkness jokes. I can say that having owned way too many British cars decades ago; including Jaguars, MGs, Healey's, a few Lotus's, and a Jensen. Never had an Aston-Martin, but almost traded an XK-E for a beautiful DB5 Shooting Brake.

Seriously, I'm sure the new wire you recommended is fine, and I'll consider it if I ever need some additional stock. None with cloth insulation, though.

Looking around further, I found this supplier that looks very good. They sell in lengths of 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 feet at pretty reasonable prices in several popular gauges. The site seems a bit difficult to navigate, but once you select the body colour and gauge the available trace colours can be selected.

This page is a list of stock colours in various gauges:

They also have an eBay store called 4rcustomwire:

Fellas,

I order some of this Striveday silicon wire from Amazon. Flexibility seems good, comes in different colors. I ordered a 22 and a 20 AWG side and I think it will be good. Rated to 200C (~400F) so should be good for engine temps.
