Anyone know the difference between pre 6/87 and post 6/87? Are they interchangeable?

I've talked to various people at BMW and they haven't a clue on the differences! I've also put one of each side by side and can't see any physical difference.

Re-posting this to see if anyone has any ideas on the difference.

According to RealOEM diagram, the subframe is the only part that has "different versions". The only part I do not see listed on that diagram is the differential housing. However, I know it is not different pre-87 as all medium case differentials fit all non-M e24's. With this logic, I would say there is no difference in structure.

Perhaps only a difference in how they were made or what they were coated with pre-87?

it might be a detailed difference in the way the part is welded. This appears to be the case with the front subframe; there are additional reinforcement pieces on the later ones, but you need to look quite hard to see them.

BTW if the parts are listed as a different weight, this might indicate that they use a different steel gauge in some parts so they could look the same even if they are actually different.

cheers
