e24 M6 Ballast Resistor?

Post by jcburk »

I bought a new ballast resistor when I over hauled my ignition system, but was never able to locate the old one. Any one know where it is on the E24 M6?

Thanks in advance,

JC,

If you want an answer, you might rethink your question.
What is a ballast resistor ?
Part numbers, links to realoem, or photos always help.

I believe the M6 does not use a ballast resistor in the ignition system. I do not have one on my '84 m635 and I don't recall seeing one on my father's '87 M6. I can stop by his place and double check.

Nice to see other M6 guys in Ohio. We are north of you in Medina right off of rt71. Let me know if you ever need parts or help. We have several e24 parts cars.

I don't remember seeing one either. Was the 'new part' a BMW item? If so what PN?

cheers

Well, my understanding is a "ballast resister" is usually in series with the ignition coil and ground. The M6 not having one WOULD explain why I couldn't find it in the ETM. AutohausAZ clearly thinks there is one on a 87 M6, Bosch p/n 0227901013, see link below

http://www.autohausaz.com/pn/0227901013

To be honest, I was logged AutohausAZ website, under 87 M6, saw it listed as an option and since I couldn't recall ever having replaced it, I ordered one.

Thanks in advance,

that looks like the (low speed) electric fan resistor to me. Technically you could call it a ballast resistor, but if I am right it is nothing to do with the ignition system

Thanks Brucey! That probably how it came to show up under ignition parts on AutohauzAZ's web site.
