Help with Coolant Leaking from Cylinder 6 Maybe

Post by Ozibimmer »

Hi Guys
I noticed today when I got home there was a slight dampness from the exhaust to cylinder head area right at the back of the block on cylinder 6. Now I have a 1980 M90 b35 motor with 123000 km with full service history.
The car does not run hot and idles really well with no coolant leaks or lost of.
Has anyone ever experienced a wet area in that region or are the M90s a problem there, I have worked on many M30s over the years at work and never seen that before or could there be a reason of maybe a blown head gasket.
Any help would be great.
I cant ask my mechanics to work on my car as he is away at moment so its up to me to sort out.
Cheers Guys

Clean it and see if it comes back. You are sure it's coolant and not oil seeping from the valve cover? If you are sure it's coolant and it returns after you clean it, I would say you have a head gasket problem at minimum.

Clean it up and after it dries blow some talcum powder around then start up and watch where it gets wet. It could be coming from the water pipe fitting on the back of the head.

Good point, completely forgot about the coolant line there.

Thanks so much guys.
Im pretty sure its got a crack in the head gasket just above the #6 exhaust flange bolt. I put in some Nulon Head gasket repair
https://www.nulon.com.au/products/Cooli ... ket_Repair
and I noticed after 15 minutes the car improved in idle and it seams after putting the powder on the area its stopped it leaking. The white smoke on startup has disappeared also and car seems to be running a little a the right temp. I will keep you all updated.
my Mechanic is back next Monday as his daughter had a little one so needed to give him time off and so I will get him to check out. I will replace the gasket and have him check out head also as I have decide to pull down and upgrade head setup and if US postal services to Oz are kind to me I will have a new set of headers thanks to Bert.
Cheers guys
Update next week on results of further driving is this stuff works on gaskets
