behr wing cell compressor rebuild

Post by johnn635 »

Some time ago (10 years) I obtained a R134A rebuild kit for the compressor on my M635. I have just dismantled the compressor and find there is a piece of open cell foam as a sort of filter. It also seems to serve the purpose of holding oil. This was not in the rebuild kit but everything else was, including the 'O'rings that fit behind the vanes. In my compressor, both front and rear ones had broken up.

Does anyone know if this material is R134a tolerant? If not - perhaps this is the reason why some compressors are designated for R12 only. It is just a disc about 2cm thick, trapped behind the actual internal compressor body. Any suggestions for either removing/replacing it?

I only found one illustrated guide to the rebuild - with photos missing!. Anyone interested I can photo what was involved and post them.

Hi John,

Most rebuild kits use the green o-rings. These were easy to locate.
They are tolerant to all A/C Freon.

I looked into adding a Behr/Bosch Wingcell repair service to my list of other rebuilds. And did research for 3 months.
I was going to offer a complete compressor rebuild, including all of the bearings, there are 5 total.

Oh, I should add that the foam was disintegrating, and bits would certainly get into the system!

I'm of the school that believes things are there for a reason.

Assuming the function is to give the oil something to cling on to, rather than sit in the bottom of the compressor, I thought about using a stanless steel pot scourer ( after it has been turned into a 'Sideshow Bob' look.
Thoughts anyone?

Well, worldwide no-one seems to help. Surely someone loves to take things apart, even if they've replaced the wing cell with a Sanden? How about it Brucey?

John,

I have acquired the knowledge thru my research, and have located all of the parts necessary to do a complete rebuild of the Behr/Bosch Wingcell.
Including the 5 bearings. Excluding the disintegrating piece of foam, I am also looking for a suitable substitute.
And I will soon offer this as a repair service to the Forum Members.

Hi Jay,
Well, I've been on this a week and posted what I know. The manufacturer is Nihon model DKV-14B and Santech list most parts. I believe Four Seasons rebuild it too.

What do you think of my idea of using a 'roughed up' stainless pan scourer. It shouldn't break up and should hold oil where the hot gas can pass by.

If you are in contact with Santech (easier for you than me - wrong accent!) perhaps they might have thoughts on the foam. Their exploded diagram shows the foam, but without any part reference.

I think I will go with my solution - we are having quite a warm summer ( climate change?) and A/C is something I have enjoyed on my daily drivers for many years.

Tks for your responses

John,

The metal scouring pad is a good idea.

Santec will not sell to me, they will not even reply to my e-mails.
They only sell the larger clutchbearing, thru stealers. And do not sell the other bearings.

Guys,
If changing the condenser to PF, and freon to 152a, would the wing cell (rebuilt of course) be an improvement over a sanden compressor? And what would it cost to rebuild the behr?

Slofut,

I am working on putting together pricing, I have only one more cost to get.
I should have the cost by Tuesday, I will then offer a WingCell rebuild service.
I have been working on this for months now, almost ready.

Best,

I will put up a new post of my own, so I will not impact this Post anymore. Sorry to John for Hijacking his thread.
But I will put up my website soon, anyway. So if anyone is interested, they can contact me.
And I can rebuild their Wingcell, and return it to them.

Probably not,
EDIT: I have changed my view on this, after further research, the BMW Wingcell A/C Compressor can use R12 and/or R134
As I understand 134 has higher pressures.
Here in CA you can get an e24 recharged with R12.
But the catch is you need to get the R12 from the shop doing the recharge, the shop I used charged $200.00, for 2 cans of R12.
Total cost of the recharge was $350.00
You can get R12 much cheaper on ebay.
