No clutch return spring

Post by tgm »

As I was working this weekend changing the clutch slave cylinder on my ‘87 635csi, I came across something really strange. The PO of the car had changed it from auto to 5 speed before I had purchased the car approximately 20 years ago. I have never had to change anything in the pedal area up until now.
Now for the weird part, as I was checking out the clutch master, I noticed I have no return spring cartridge on my clutch pedal nor do I see a place for it to mount.
I guess I’ve been driving it all these years this way as it doesn’t appear to have ever been mounted.
All else appears to be OK, so should I bleed the clutch and forget about it?
The mounting tab for the spring cartridge pivot is on the pedal but the pedal frame assembly has no rear tab that the spring cartridge would react against.
Any comments are welcome.
Thanks guys,

That’s about what I figured. I guess I’ll just forget that I ever looked at it

I agree with Ken. If in the future the pedal fails to return fully, you can try adding a spring before changing the clutch if that appears to be necessary.
