Theft alarm

I am considering removing what looks like a theft alarm system from under the left side dash of my 1988 M6. The engine has stumbled a few times and I am attempting to rule out all possible causes. Anyone know if I could be looking at a factory installed alarm? It has a control box, speaker, and little red LED/switch.

Factory alarm will have red light behind R/D door (maybe L/H in US) and key slot on rear panel between the rear lights.
