M635CSi - Too much smoke from exhaust?

Post by jl6er »

Hey everyone,

Need some feedback from you guys...hopefully to put my mind at ease a bit...I'm concerned that the M is producing too much exhaust smoke. The smoke is definitely not blue in color but it appears thicker/whiter than just clear "steam". Being that the past few days have been exceptionally cold in the northeast, its even more noticeable than usual so I thought I'd take a quick video (click YouTube link below) of the car idling this morning after a 20 minute drive. The outside temp was 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks guys and Happy New Year!

Can you tell if it is using more oil or coolant than usual? Otherwise we are just guessing...

As per above, but just wanted to add a couple of points:

What rpm are you idling at?
That looks like a stunning car!

Cheers,

Rob

Thanks Rob. The idle is another small concern - after initial start, the car will idle at 700-750 rpm. But after a few minutes of driving, the it doesn't get down this low and ends up hovering around/just under 1000 rpm.

Oil and Coolant levels appear to be good. Car had oil service and coolant flush from my local German shop a month or so after I acquired it in May 2017 and has been driven about 1,000 miles since. Current mileage is 69,000.
I wanted a valve adjustment done in May as well, but the shop had difficulty sourcing the correct shims for the M88 motor, so the adjustment never happened; they have since been able to source the shims so i will be rescheduling this work soon. Other work that was done in the past 6 months included a new OEM muffler, fuel pump, clutch slave cylinder, cap/rotor, and belts.

At 15 deg F ( -9 deg C ) that looks perfectly normal to me . Water vapor in exhaust gas condensing .
Check your expansion tank level regularly or after a drive but at that temp. I'd expect to see every other car in your street doing the same .

+1--I'm in Rockland NY and the exhaust vapor on most cars in this temperature

will show condensation.

Where are you in NJ, maybe we can meet in better weather and share war stories?

We are about to suffer a cold snap here in the UK, but nothing like as bad as the conditions you chaps are enduring in the US East.

Hey Justin, one of your M635 pictures made it onto the Wikipedia E24 as a reference photo. How did you manage that?
