What are these?

Post by randall977 »

Bought these hoping they would fit under my 635 - but no too narrow and no appropriate fixing points. They're listed to fit an M6 - part numbers are 51712230357 and 51711925152 'air duct'. Anyone know what and where these fit?

Those are NLA air scoops for an M635CSI. M6's have bolts on the shipping fangs to fit these. I might be interested in them for my M6, if you are looking to sell them.

I can see how the larger one would bolt on, but how does the smaller one work? Do you install both on the car at the same time? And how do they actually work? Where are they directing air to? Anyone have these installed and could share some pics?

Thanks,

Eric

We tried to fit these to my M yesterday - there ain't no bolts on my fangs! The scoop is narrower than it looks in the picture - pretty much the same width as the oil cooler.

Ah, but would they fit an M6, i.e. with US bumpers?

So is the bigger one an air scoop for the oil cooler then? Still can't tell what the smaller one is for.

Thanks,

Ron,

Great pic, thanks. So it looks like this works on the world bumper style M6. Did you happen to try and mount this on one of your '85 M635s? Also, did you install this or did it come from the factory like that? Sounds like you did, but I wanted to double check.

Thanks again,

Eric

Looks like it DID just come out of the factory, or better =D>

I wish Ron would stop posting pix like this, making the rest of us look bad #-o

Can't believe you sold that example Ron :-k

Looks to me like the smaller one bolts to on at the back of the long one.

Based on the picture, turn the small one around and lay it down. Now the two bolt holes on the long surface we can see would be against the larger piece, and the tab would mount to the same bolt as the long tab at the back end of the big piece.

Jose,

That makes sense. It's like a puzzle. If arranged like that, is the intent that the air hits the back and then goes left or right and hopefully finds its way to the brakes?

Thanks for the replies - good to know that these do actually fit an M6! I'd love to sell them on to someone for what they cost me - which was £75...

The smaller piece bolts up under the condenser using 2 self tapping screws (6.4mm) and tinnerman body nuts. The long tang on the larger piece then joins up to the short tang on the smaller piece using a tinnerman style body nut.
I imagine that the smaller piece is used where the car does NOT have an engine oil cooler as this appears to sit in the same place. I use mine to support a transmission oil cooler and the engine cooler is mounted in a different place, but then my car is not standard.
Incidently, I re-made the larger part in aluminium and it forms part of a complete engine shield.

OK Nick, you can't make a statement like that without sharing multiple pictures of what you have done. This sounds like a great idea. May want to start a new thread though. I didn't mean to hijack Randall's thread.

Can you ship them to me in California, Randall? If so, then I'll take em, mate!

Cheers.
