Having trouble viewing the pix, Google asked me to log in, but then said there was an error :(

Inserting photos is easy, they just can't be "too" big

Use the "Attachments" tab below \:D/

Does the block have a big "L" painted on the side by the starter :-k

Also should be "3.5" in the block casting [-o<

try this
3.5 is stamped on the water jacket - I don't see the L but it's hard to get a good look. I understood the ecu might be different so I took a picture of that also. thanks for any help you can give.

Here's a shot for ya with the engine out of the car, just a bit easier to see the big but faint "L", which is in fact on the raised water jacket :-k

Can't see the "3.5" but I think that was cast into the raised water jacket as well :-?

Not my M90, wish it was =P~

Very Interesting. The fact that it has the raised water passage and the "L" stencilled on the block shows that it is an M90 motor for sure. However the ECU is wrong as far as I can see. You should have what is referred to as an ECU ending in 002. Could it have been switched in an federalization process. I did have the one you show in my parts bin, but sold it to a fellow for his 528. Good luck finding an 002 if that is what you need.. I had fun finding one for mine. I am going by the fact that it is what my 81 euro with an M90 has. Maybe I am wrong on your early car. Don't let go of that motor. The block is what the M1 and early M635s were based on. And when running right it pulls like a freight train.Anyone else.??

so it has the long water jacket on the left side of the motor and the jacket has "3.5" cast into it. I don't see the painted "L" - but did any other motor have the same style long water jacket with freeze plug at the end?

It has a 5spd trans but it isn't original dogleg - so that is why I am trying to figure out if the motor is original.

can anyone say for sure what year models used the ecu in the previous picture?

I am going home to look for an oil cooler - I understand that is another tell.

thanks for your help.....this is a pic of the car in question - i just got it - anyone know it??? from reno NV

The motor shown shows the L is on the long water passage. M90 only motor with the raised water passage. The oil filter head has the provision for the oil cooler. Only the 81 M90, last year of production, doesn't have the raised water passage. Mine doesn't, but is for sure, as confirmed by the piston bores when opened up for a rebuild. Picture is of an M90 for sure. Not all M90s had a dog leg. This was owner preference when ordered. Could have been replaced at some point. You might want to check your rear end ratio. If 3.07, it is too low for an overdrive trans. The holy grail is a 3:64. but next would be a 3:45 worse case a 3:25. Gears are switchable as long as they are from a sideloader diff.

I checked and the oil cooler is present. I will take all this as confirmation that it is the M90..... this is good news. thanks for your help

You can confirm that the block matches the chassis vin by looking at the machined surface above the starter. This surface can be seen at the bolted end of the chain. The engine is a late M90 with Motronic that doesn’t have the raised water jacket but the painted “L”is clearly visible.

FYI my M90 (# 5550216 July 1979) has the long water jacket and the "L" however like the other M90 photo does not have the ribs from the water jacket to the engine mount bosses (re your photo below the air slide) ?

Also my ECU is the same part number 0 280 001 114.

002 ecu is for a motronic motor. These were fitted to 635CSi models with M90 engine (short stroke, wide bore) from mid 1980 to 5/82 .

Earlier 635 CSi models (like the OPs) used L-jet fuelling and had a whole different ECU numbering scheme. 114 may well be correct for that. IIRC there were two versions of the L-jet setup, the last of which only lasted a few months before they switched to motronic.

BTW being a European-only model whether you had the dogleg or the overdrive transmission the correct diff would have been 3.07. Later 635CSi models which were sold in the USA had different diff ratios.

cheers
