M90 distributor position ?

Post by jeme9 »

Hi the photo below shows the position of distributor on the M90 engine I have bought. The vacuum diaphragm points to the exhaust manifold side of the car.
Photos I have seen of other cars (and the position of distributor in my e3 engine) is 180 degree different ?

Is my distributor in wrong position ?

Note: at TDC #1, the rotor was pointing to the mark on the distributor housing, so if I rotate the distributor I will also need to turn the distributor drive 180 deg.

Hmm, don't have an M90, but here's a shot of my L-jet M30 and it's clear 180 out from yours :-?

Didn't read your entire story, does that mill run :-k

Me thinks they should all be the same [-o<

There is a notch in the housing that should align with the rotor when cylinder number one would be firing =D>

Thanks Bobbo, yes I expect all should point the same way.
Bought engine so not running yet, and putting into e9.

PS your inlet looks nice, I also had mine hydroblasted - think I will need to clean up surrounding parts so it doesn't stand out too much now!

you can retime the distributor several different ways (as many as there are teeth on the skew gear) depending on how the gears mesh. There is a 'right way' which varies with model mainly because

a) the distributor fouls on other parts around it if it is fitted in some orientations and
b) the location of the spark plug leads on the distributor cap varies.

In any event the distributor is turned slightly to fine-tune the ignition timing, using a strobe light.

cheers
