EPA Emission Sticker

Post by motroman »

I live in California where, every two years, my 89E24 easily passes smog. However, every time I'm at the smog station for a test, the tech wonders where the EPA sticker is. It wasn't on the car when I bought it. California law doesn't require it for smog testing but it is an irritant since it's supposed to be, as I see on some cars, pasted on the passenger side strut tower under the hood. So, having a little bit of time on my hands, I called BMW customer service. After a pause, they said I have to order the sticker from my BMW dealer. Off to the dealer I went who wouldn't help me unless I could prove my car was a legal import and not grey market. That was easy. Next, he made a copy of my VIN, and said he would call BMW and get back to me. He did, a day later, with the news that BMW no longer has the stickers. So here's why I'm writing, besides the story. There are places that reconstruct those stickers but first, they need a picture of a real sticker. So, I would appreciate anyone with an 88 or 89 EPA label on an E24 to take a picture of the sticker and send it to me. Also, if any of you can look at your sticker and send me the part number that may also help me finding one. Many thanks.

Mine is a 89 as well. I don't see an emissions sticker under the hood either and never been asked.

Yes, it's usually on the passenger side strut tower under the hood and was and is supposedly required of all cars imported into the U.S. or manufactured in the U.S. I did get a response from a local 90 E28 owner and BMW enthusiast and expert with the same M30B35 engine who kindly offered to let me take a picture of the EPA label which will happen today. Fortunately it's classified by the California Air Resources Board as a member of the same engine family (KBM3.4V5F678) that was also installed on, E12's, E34's, E32's, and E23's. It was kind of funny. He, like most people, was curious I had a grey market car and was looking to make it look legit. But, I explained that my car was imported into the U.S. by BMW in October 1988 and is not a grey market vehicle. I even offered to show him the BMW Classic Certificate for my car affirming those facts. He was cool and said not necessary. Maybe I had the bad luck to take the vehicle to a cranky smog tech. As mentioned before, the car easily passes all tests and the California Air Resources Board says the label is not required given that many cars have replacement hoods, fenders, and strut towers after front end collisions.

I'm the second owner since 1995 and don't know if there were any front end damages at all. I believe I have all of the other stickers? Does anyone know what stickers we should have for the 89 and who we can get them from?

You guys can try Kos, board member from the UK, but he will likely need an example, before he can reproduce them for you :-?

Surely other board members have an '89 and can provide this info [-o<

I was looking for Emission's sticker in large letters and also on the shock tower when yet it was right in front of me on the hood, maybe because it is one of the later years?

I was looking in the wrong place all long and it was on the hood. Seems like the 88/89's are onto the hood.
