Gasket set for M635CSi

Post by Pod »

I know the differences between an M88 and S38 engine. All the gasket sets on offer appear to be for the S38. Can someone please tell me if the gasket set for the engines is different?

IIRC the head gasket is the same but the rocker cover gasket (not that there are rockers of course) is a different pn
there may other differences too.

cheers

Thanks, Brucey. Looks like I may have to take the risk and buy one anyway! Then I’ll know and be able to share with the forum. The reason I asked is that the S38 sets are available on eBay from £134 upwards, whilst others, not specifically stating which engine, can go for up to 3x as much!

IMO, the crucial component is the head gasket, so as long as that fits, I’m sure I can surmount any other variations :-k

As for the part numbers, in my experience, BMW sometimes uses different ones for the M635CSi than the other E24s - but the actual parts can be interchangeable.

it may well be possible to use the valve cover gasket in the other engine but they are slightly different from one another

and this shows the M88 gasket [11121317689]

you can see that the latter has a slightly different shape in the same area. This may or may not be significant. There may be other differences too.

I'll be interested to hear how you get on.

cheers

I replaced my valve cover gasket this summer. Ordered 11-12-1-312-172 from ECS Tuning and it did not fit. I then ordered 11-12-1-317-689 from Schmiedman.com for $34.93 USD and it fit my S38.

I ordered a kit that included the valve cover gasket for my S38. The gasket included was a few mm shorter front/back than the head. I ordered just a valve cover gasket for my S38 and it fit. I believe that the included gasket in the kit was for an M88, which has single row cam chain, and that is why it's a few mm shorter.

well that is weird, the -172 gasket is listed for 'cat equipped' cars (which ought to have S38 motors) and the -689 gasket is for non cat models (which ought to have M88 motors).

I thought maybe I'd screwed up but I just rechecked the ETK and that is what it says. The -172 gasket is listed as applicable to E34 and the -689 isn't, again suggesting that the -172 part fits engines with twin row chains and the -689 one doesn't.

cheers

Brucey, you are correct, my bad. The -689 gasket fits my M88 motor, not S38.
