engine stopping when it gets warm
I have a 1988 E24 and have a peculiar problem . Start up from cold is fine take if for a drive goes well up until the indicator on the temperature gauge gets to mid range ( 12 oclock position )then is starts to falter and die . Wait a few moments it starts up but as soon as load is put on it it dies again , leave if for about 10 mins if fires up and will go for about a mile then die ?? frustrating . Thought it might be fuel blockage but if that was the case if would not unblock it self would it any ideas think heat has something to do with it

Re: engine stopping when it gets warm
It could be fuel blockage at the sock filter on the in-tank pump. Trash in the bottom of the tank can be sucked into/over the filter. Engine dies due to fuel starvation. Suction gone from the pick-up, the trash falls away until the engine is started again, cycle repeats.

I forgot to ask is there any fault codes with the BMW 635 that can indicate the faults ???

Re: engine stopping when it gets warm
on most models, no. There is a limited fault code function on later models. I have rarely heard of anyone correctly diagnosing a fault with it though....
bad solder joints in the ECU can cause exactly the symptoms you describe. I have heard of crank sensors becoming erratic this way too.
cheers

Re: engine stopping when it gets warm
Main relay or Fuel Pump relay can give intermittent issues when hot

A new ECU already replaced am I am looking for an Electrical Diagram set for my 88 model where can I obtain a set please , still checking out all relays etc etc and sensors such an arduous task to find . We ran the car to warm while stationary and does not stop only when you drive the car might give a clue .

Thanks to all have now a 1988/9 electrical diagram and have been through the system ( checked fuel supply, tank, dirt, relays ect etc ecu seems the CRANK angle sensor is at fault and ordered a New One from BMW in Germany Thanks to all and hope that works any other comments always valuable
will report when it is in

Just be aware that most Electrical diagrams relate to the American spec.cars. In various places the Euro system differs.

Re: engine stopping when it gets warm
Well I have now replaced ECU, airflow, Idle control, plug leads, rotor cap , front engine sensor, two sensors on top of thermostat cover , fuel pumps both and filter fuel relay and still when warm stops . Took it from the work shop yesterd ay ran like a dream engine purred. temperature came up to miday on the temp guage as it was 30 deg C outside air . Pulled up outside my house and engine died . Switched off left for a few mins then switched on no problems and drove into garage and it dies SO WHAT NEXT ,, I am told it could be the fuel filter so bridge it out to check anything else I will pay $1000 if anyone can fix it
Also a little bit lumpy when starting cold but when warmed up beautiful idle

Change the main ecu and fuel pump relays.

Re: engine stopping when it gets warm
Hi Shark fan replaced the ecu and put in a new fuel relay still stops when warm after about 10 to 15 mins on the road in hot weather its 30 deg C today one comment from a BMW man was to bridge the fuel relay as this was a major problem when racing any more ideas Scarland
Re: engine stopping when it gets warm
sharkfan Is there a code reader or anything simlar for these 1988 models I see them on sale at pelican can they help Scarland
Re: engine stopping when it gets warm
Have you changed the main ECU relay; it has two output contacts and depending on the age of the relay and its internal configuration it can fail giving an output on one contact but not the other, which might stop the car.
The E24 is too old for any effective code indications from the ECU.

Re: engine stopping when it gets warm
Thanks Sharkfan I have not changed the main ECU relay will purchase and install Scarland back when done and tested Scarland
Re: engine stopping when it gets warm
Sharkfan I was also told that to check the fuel relay bridge it out and then run to check I am told the relays used to be a problem when racing due to heat generated also is the MAIN Relay the one you are talking about the ecu one THanks Scarland
Re: engine stopping when it gets warm
I know nothing of under-bonnet racing temperatures but the main relay ( on my 1982 car at least) is next to the fuel pump relay on the outside of the relay box. It too can be shorted out, and many of us do carry shorting straps for this reason, but it needs a one-to-two shorting strap as it has two outputs from one input.

Re: engine stopping when it gets warm
Thanks Shark Fan will have to get a lecy as am not a electrical man but thanks, is there any problems bridging at least it will confirm the fact that both are okay ??? Scarland
Re: engine stopping when it gets warm
Sorry if mentioned/covered already, but I've come a cross a situation where problems started occurring once everything get properly warmed through - and the cause was deteriorated rubber fuel lines that effectively collapsed once the fuel got hot ( which it will do as it's constantly flowing between tank and engine bay). If they are still original, my suggestion would be to replace all flexi fuel pipes throughout the engine bay and around the pump/filter/tank areas.
