Jason,

Have you base lined the car. The newest e24 is 30 years old.

Which 635 do you have?

Are you mechanically inclined to do work on cars?

Tell us a little about the car and what has been done by you. You say you are a new owner.
If you have records of resent maintenance that would help too.

Sounds like a fuel issue but hard to tell from your description.

Here are some good links for base-lining.

Though the e24 is basically a 2 door e28 mechanically speaking..unless early e12 based...

Do you mean it won't crank, or cranks but never fires on a restart?

It cranked but wouldnt start.

After finding a few disconnected vacuum lines and one disconnected plug it now starts every time.
Thanks everyone.

It smokes pretty bad so I've got to either rebuild or engine swap

Run it a while as-is. My 633 smoked like a tar pot when awakened from it's lengthy slumber, but a couple cycles of soaking the cylinders with ATF and changing the oil, the rings finally loosened and sealed.

After six years slumber my 635CSi was producing huge amounts of black smoke; new oil, new plugs, new air filter and a tweak to the mixture screw against a CO meter returned it to normal fabulous running.
