Getrag Transmission Numbers.... Again

Post by G03rt2 »

I started looking into this because I'll be upgrading my clutch soon, along with parts needed to firm up the shifting. The reason I don't really know what transmission I have is because I have a 1981, but it has a M30B35 from a later model. I started to wonder if the motor and transmission was swapped, or just the motor.

The numbers on the transmission are:
262.0.0510.90
225
1.3

It's a 3-piece case, but definitely not a dog-leg. Is it possible to have a close ratio with overdrive?

This is more for my curiosity at this point then anything else. Any help is appreciated.

Getrag casing numbers are problematic for identification. It sounds like an overdrive 265, not CR. CR is normally associated with the dogleg with 1:1 final ratio. Do you have any photos ?

I do have pictures. What were you thinking? I mean, what should I take a picture of to identify it better? I don't doubt that it's just a standard 5-speed transmission, but post after post on BMW forums has me confused now.

Not a close ratio if it has an overdrive 5th. If regular shift pattern that is it for sure. Just because it is an 81 doesn't mean it is a close ratio which was was an option so it could have come with the O.D. box original and have the mechanical speedo drive provision

in 1981 the default manual transmission on a 635CSi would have been an overdrive 5s gearbox (Getrag 265/6, with detachable bellhousing) paired with a 3,07 diff. This has a standard (i.e. fifth gear offset) shift pattern, and the net gearing means that if you could pull the (overdrive) top gear, the car would do about 200mph . The alternate optional (sports) gearbox would have been a close ratio Getrag 265/5 gearbox which looks the same apart from the tail housing, and has an offset first gear (i.e. dogleg shift pattern). Again a 3,07 diff would have been standard, meaning that the top gear ratio with a CR gearbox would be the same as 4th in the OD gearbox.

The 265/5 (CR) gearbox is often called a 262 (CR), but both 265/5 and 265/6 have a main housing that says 262 on it, which is a carry-over from the 262 four-speed model. If you have a 265/5 CR gearbox sat side by side with a 265/6 (OD) gearbox they are only different in the tail housing. Otherwise they are identical in appearance.

All this explained in detail (with pictures and links) here

Great info, thanks Brucey. I'm interested if anyone has an opinion how the 265/6 feels compared to the 260. I've heard the 265 is referred to as a more desirable box. Does it feel sportier? Different linkage feel? Tighter? I believe the 265/5 CR is referred to as the sports box, was the 265/ever referred to as a sports box? thx...
