86 E24 equipped with EWS system?

Post by SORIANOTRON »

Hey guys,

Been working an ECU issue for my 1986 635csi...i have a bosch 059....

I would like to know if these ECU’s had the EWS system?

I have been searching and searching and the best answer I could come up with was that “BMW introduced the EWS system in ECU’s in 1987”

Not much in this forum as far as EWS info goes...

So does anyone know for certain if e24’s have an EWS system and if so, what ECU’s/years?

Thanks guys

No EWS as is installed on later BMW models. What is your issue ?

My ECU was diagnosed as fried, some of the internal components were burnt and the diagnostic tool came back with a read: 100 DME Control Unit Final Stage

So i had sent out the unit to be repaired but unfortunately parts were not available so i decided to purchase a rebuilt unit.

When purchasing the unit it was described to me as “plug and play” as long as your unit does not have EWS...

So EWS as i understand it was a system impletmeeneted into bmw ECU’s at some point that “assign” unique rolling codes to your car/vin to prevent tampering or swapping of ecu’s.....

Well thats the best i understand it.

Here is some real good DME talk, that covers EWS, and many other issues of concern when changing out the DME.

Thanks guys.

Ended up buying a rebuilt Bosch 059

And it solved my stalling/non start issue!

So I can confirm, no EWS for our ECU’s

As long as they are the same model #’s the ECU is plug and play. No coding required.

Hey Bobbo, no stupid questions here ! :)

EWS = Electronische Wegfahrsperre or Electronic Driveaway Protection System. Or some people say it is Italian, Eclusiasta Winastubida Sineasta meaning, "You toucha me car, I breaka you face:.

Great stuff baders, many thanks! =D>

Looks rather complicated as well, in typical BMW fashion #-o

And I've always succumbed to the theory that the only stupid question is the one not asked [-(
