Redline MT-90 in Getrag 260 Gearbox?

Post by smtguy »

I have read good things about Redline Gear oil. Is anyone using MT-90 in a Getrag 260 box? If so any comments, positive or negative?
Thanks,

I have used both Redline MT-90 and ATF for years in race and street cars. Highly recommend them. Make sure your seals are good, these synthetics will find them if they are not.

I've used Redline MTL for like "ever", also with zero issues =D>

But as I did not know what the difference is between MT90 and MTL, I decided to check out the website :-k

Turns out, the only difference is the weight #-o

MTL is 75W80 and MT90 is 75W90, so I doubt that there's really much of anything different between the 2 and are just about interchangeable :-"

States that MTL was there original gear oil

Go for it \:D/

I've used MTL but FWIW have heard that the "ideal" for a Getrag is to mix about 75% MTL with 25% MT-90. Maybe some others can chime in about that internet rumor. I imagine a lot would depend upon the climate where you're located and how your car is driven.

I've posted this before. ATF is the best to use and is listed on most BMW trannys.

Reason being twofold. ATF is high detergent and the light weight

will not fill the dimples on the forks that slow down the syncros.

Heavier weight will fill in the fork dimples and causes less friction.

So I am fairly well confused now. I can understand the advantages of both a lighter weight and a heavier weight gear box oil depending on box design. Perhaps I don't understand gearbox design and construction very well, but I find it difficult to believe that a the Getrag 260 could operate both on ATF or 80-90W gear oil and still run reliably? What I am trying to cure is the nochiness, and quiet down some of the wear related noise. So the question is which gear oil/fluid will best achieve these goals?

More possibly related info: My car lives in Southern California, so it will never see very cold temperatures .

Thanks for your input!

Have been running ATF in these boxes for nearly 40 years. Lots of reasons why. Smoother shifting being one. Super clean upon internal inspection. Not a cold weather thing. ATF is magic in the Getrags for racing or long term street.

Hmmm My manual says nothing about ATF as even being an option in the Getrag 260.

There are many Getrag 260's out there installed by BMW that have a sticker From BMW recommending Dextron III. Don't use synthetic. I've also used and installed in literally hundreds of cars, Dextron II or III. Most noticeable and immediate effect is much better 1-2 shifts. When servicing the cars w gear oil they always seem to have a grayish tinge to the fluid on draining. The atf does not.

DrTwin -
I have looked for this sticker on the gearbox, but have not found one. How do I know for certain that ATF is compatible with my gearbox?
