Manual Conversion using a 528i Donor

Post by Rangi246 »

Hi everyone

I'm hoping to get a little bit of advice in relation to our auto to manual swap.

I've got the opportunity to purchase an 85 528i manual to use as the donor vehicle for our 86 635csi. What I can't figure out is what gearbox the car is running. Its got a build date of May 1985 and the last 7 digits in the Vin are 7594211. Is there any easy way to tell what manual gearbox its running without looking at the car?

I've already found on here how to tell the different gearbox types up close (waffle base, Fins, 2 or 3 piece etc) and that with this donor car i'd need to drill the bell housing for the Motronic sensors and i'll need to source a Motronic M30 flywheel (got one lined up) to make it work.

I'd prefer to use a G260/6 or G265 box but they're pretty hard to get here in NZ. Has anyone done a manual swap with a G260/5 and how did that work out?

Cheers
Mark

I would think the 528 should be running Motronic . None the less get a hold of Addam Smith in Brisbane on this forum. He is scrapping BMWs and should have all the correct parts you will need and shipping from OZ to NZ shouldn't be costly Last time I was in contact with him this was his email address If not search around on the forum and see if you can dig him up he hasn't been active in a while but is in business for sure. Maybe google BMW scrappers in Oz?? He is the go to guy. I will be in NZ in July but I sure couldn't haul that mess with me!!

Any of the three gearboxes should work as long as you have the driveshaft and shift console to match.
