Euro 635 CSI backfires and dies

Post by RTHLSS1 »

Hi guys,

I bought 635 csi 1985 manual that hasnt been driven for 19 years.

Owner only started the car and sold it to me running as it is. I tried my best to get it running but unable.

I replaced fuel pump, sparks, coil, rotor, replaced tested air flow meter, checked if all igniton cabels are ok and pluged correctly... fuel pressure is good, engine compression is good. Gas was pumped out by previous owner but i still smelled old gas so I tested how it runs with fresh gas from clean small gas tank - same result only smells nicer.

Car is still backfirining and dies fast. From time to time it loses spark and does not start for a while.

Any suggestions ideas?

Thanks

Have you checked distributor cap by chance?

I doesn't take very many backfires to ruin the AFM. A bad ignition switch can cause the symptoms you are describing. Try wiggling the ig switch while the car is running to see if you can exacerbate the matter. Double check the main relay function. Make certain pin 18 (as I recall which supplies full time power to the ecu) is sound. I would also check all of the grounds on the car. I've seen many more faulty rotors than caps however the cap is worth a good look including the carbon center electrode from the coil. It never hurts to start the car in the darkness of night to see if you have any visible arcing from plug wires, etc. false air from the bottom of the intake boot can cause lean misfires as well. Check for any cracks. You can spray a little brake cleaner around the rubber connections to see if you get a change in rpm or white smoke out the tailpipe.

Thanks guys for your help I tried what you suggested but nothing helped.

At the end I replaced injectors, adjust valves, cleaned the tank again since it was dirty inside. Car started running but only for some a day or 2. I realized that tank is peeling from inside and it clogged my fuel pump which became very loud.

I am waitting for new gas tank and new fuel pump I won’t be running it anymore meanwhile so that I don’t mess up injectors again.
