Pinging?

Post by smtguy »

I had my e24 on the freeway today and heard it pinging slightly in 3rd, and 4th gear under moderate acceleration. Am I wrong in assuming that the ECU is supposed to make sure that doesn't happen? I use good quality fuel and put Premium in, so I don't think that is the problem. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

The ECU can't exactly compensate for pinging, if that's what you meant. But there shouldn't be pinging unless something is wrong.

It seems to be the fate of many M30B32s that valve stem oil seals start leaking and the catalytic converter plugs up. That would cause pinging.

Unless you changed the chip to alter the timing, you should be using 87 octane fuel
for the m30. it's a low compression engine(m30b34) 8:1 (m30b35) 9:1

If it pings using 87 probably excessive carbon in combustion chamber
or the timing is off from the ecu.

There is no chip that I know of and the CAT was replaced early this year. I tried 87 octane, and the pinging is actually worse.

You can get one of these to see if you have excess carbon.

Pinging worse with 87 means your explode is well before TDC very advanced.

When there is carbon buildup, the carbon gets extremely hot and can ignite the cylinder charge well before TDC creating detonation.

If you do have excessive buildup try Seafoam through the intake manifold to try and reduce the carbon in the combustion
chamber.

good luck
