rear upper cam housing cover plate gasket

Post by emac »

I am pretty sure my rear cover plate is leaking. Changed the oil return o ring and replaced the valve cover gasket and from everything I can see I think the leak is from the rear cover plate.

Is there any way to replace this gasket without removing the engine or head? Thanks

Are you sure it's not coming from the oil pressure sender/switch at the back of the head?

Yes, the cam tray rear cover gasket can be replaced without major teardown. You will need to remove the valve cover, and have some small combination, or box end wrenches to work with.

There is practically no space to work back there, but with the right assortment of very small tools, you can get that taken care of. The gasket is readily available through any of the suppliers mentioned on this forum. Spread a very thin layer of Permatex Ultra Grey on the gasket before assembly. It ensures a good seal.

Thanks! I am sure I can get to the bolts, i just didn't know if there was enough room for the bolts to clear the head.

To get that cover off I use regular old combination wrenches, and patience. Although you can try a ratcheting box end wrench on it. I think maybe those ratchet wrenches that allow a bolt to pass clean through could work as well.
